You'd think so. Problem is none of these cats diversify. Most of the labels have one signature artist, maybe two, and once that artist is done, their done.

Detroit is one of those places with more chiefs than indians and everybody wanna be a boss even with no business sense. A lot of these are street cats who had enough money to start a label and signed his homeboys that's pretty much it.

If we could get a solid independent scene we would be popping but we need a (few) transcendent artist(s) and a label with business sense. Everybody talks a lot about being the "new Motown" but there aint no new Barry Gordys.

Ray Cash is nice, his debut is slept on

man i used to bump the shit out that album. As far as some of the other people mentioned i'll just comment:

Vado- Always was trash to me, at best he was average and he doesn't stand out

Rich Boy- Hot for a minute but he's dependent on production. I can't see him carrying an album by himself.

thats some real shit

somewhat related question, does Detroit love Big Sean as much as he loves Detroit lol?

I would think so because he like the only nigga to blow up like that and actually be from the city. there was Em sure but he not from here. niggas I know respect Em because of the work he put in to get recognized like he was really nice at the battle shit but its not the same because he not relateable like Sean. The biggest artists in the city right now is definitely DoughBoyz Cashout. rumors been going around that Tip supposed to sign them but I dont know how true that is.

They do now, they didn't before Kanye.

Aside from label politics I really think their grind is to blame. Some cats just release a single and do ok in the first week and you don't see any visibility from the artist. I remember after J.Cole dropped his album and his first week numbers came in this dude was touring all over the place and still dropping more and more videos. I seen cats get their first week numbers and then come out & say they're already working on album 2, you're sitting their scratching your head like "wait what ? Already ? I just got this album SMH" Cats need to grind.

Jeezy did 172k in the first week when his first album came out and dropped dayum near 7 or 8 videos not to mention the countless records he featured on and went on to go platinum. His albums never really had big numbers in the first week but he fuckin grinds. Look at Lil B & Curren$y.... Lil B isn't major but EVERYBODY know who he is why ? cuz he grinds, this nigga drops a video every single day fam, Curren$y drops music all the time and shoots videos for them. These cats are building a fan base so when they do get their "Big Break" & labels really put that big money behind them those fans will support them. Niggas need to grind.

While thats true you have to realize how the music industry is right now. Most artists don't "give up" on their project the labels do. Thats why t.i. left laface because he wanted to put out another video off the I'm Serious album and LA Reid basically said shit was a dud and it's time to move on. If that happen then when shit was selling how you think it goes now? These days your have to put out 300 mixtapes and have a crazy ass buzz for the label to even THINK about pushing you and even then sometimes they still don't..... word to Big K.R.I.T

I think some of these cats expect labels to do that to be honest, especially cats with 360 deals. It doesn't take much to shoot a video, stupid niggas shoot youtube videos everyday, its not like it has to be MTV ready all the time but it shouldn't be hard to find street records that labels won't push and make videos out of them. Sounds simple.

I think these cats need to go back to 1980s style videos by just recording live performances and posting them to youtube for exposure....its a simple way to get visuals out there.

I get what you're saying but a lot of cats do. Now a days if you don't have a buzz it's prolly not because your shits not "out there" enough. Everyone has access to shit these days, why keep "grinding" and pushing something thats receiving no positive feedback? He brought up j.cole and jeezy. Those dudes do good numbers so why not continue dropping vids, those examples aren't the average rapper. He also brought up touring and now a days all rappers go on tour. Shit my stepsisters dad been on tour for a year and I guarantee you haven't heard a single track from him....

i heard of them through Big Sean

on the subject of grinding and visuals, they are a necessity. These artists can't give me no bullshit about it cost too much when @DGainz gets millions of views off filming the same damn video for separate artists

I know this is a group, but fuck it. Philly's Most Wanted

Cross the Border was my fucking shit

=related

Man these niggas just fell off the face of the Earth. Last I heard they was doing they own separate things(yea okay). Dumb fucks shoulda signed with the Roc

KRIT should call up David Banner, make a indy label, sign Tito Lopez (idk if he signed or not) and Big Sant and build from there

ray cash belong on this page i thought bumbpin my music was the shit then he disappeared

yeah everybody in Detroit wanna rap but no one can run a label...u ever heard of Clear Soul Forces? these guys are way better than doughboys cashout

Ray Cash is cool too. I like dude, his problem is he from Ohio. Midwest rappers are in the position Southern rappers used to be in. A few artists slide through but for the most part niggas aint really listening for Midwest talent, damn shame because Cash is dope. Southern rappers used to have to fight hard to get heard but that struggle is almost solely a Midwest thing now. No major labels in Chicago, Cleveland or Detroit so we fucked lol

Whats the independent label scene looking like out there, cuz the South and West have plenty

I can't speak for other places but here in Detroit there's a few, there was a couple like Rock Bottom Entertainment (battle rapper Calicoe used to be down with them) I think they tanked though. Dirty Glove Entertainment was popping here a few years ago but since their main artist (Blade Icewood) got smoked they been pretty much dead.

So there are some that come and go but none seem to stick around.

Dirty Glove was pretty big though, they had joints with Birdman, Freeway, and a few other major cats. Their producer K.I.D.D. produced most of B.G.'s album Livin' Legend (he was living here in Detroit at the time), Short Dawg (of YMCMB) was signed there for awhile too. They had a lot of the hoods jumping making some local hits and classics but their pretty much done today, this was 5-6 years ago. Rock Bottom created some local hits and classics too but they are completely off the map.

I guess that's the catch nowadays :( luckily for artists coming out today the labels are losing their control, you don't even need a label to build that fanbase. Universal has been losing money since 2008. The Independents are where it's at, look at Hov with Roc Nation or MMG, it's really just an independent label with a sick ground/marketing game. Look at Kendrick with TDE or Wiz Khalifa. KRIT definitely shoulda sold a lot more than he did. I think the label definitely dropped the ball with his project. KRIT needs a strong independent label & a distribution deal with a major. Let the label handle the distribution and the independent handle the marketing of his projects. Shit that's how I would've played it.

i've always said that Roc Nation was just and indy label with money

More & more artists are starting to see that majors are losing power on the charts they still control the radio but you don't really need radio. You will see a rise in Indies from smart rappers who know how to play the system. The O.G.s like E-40 & Too Short and the newbies like TDE are all showing us that you can make an impact without a major.
