How does someone who isn't from or live in the NY or the US for that matter, have such a strong opinion on Hip-Hop in the US? I don't understand this.

1 of the basic requirements of a classic is high replay value so I wold say no...it does sound a lil dated though and hasn't aged as well as some other classics imo.

I think albums like Slim Shady LP, Marshall Mathers LP and Eminem Show are better examples.

See we can play these games all day.

I dont think an album replay value can be judged by how well it aged?

You have albums like Paid in Full that sounds VERY 80's but is still considered classic. Yes I agree Illmatic didn't age well but it's still a classic.

I agree w/ the bolded. 2 clear any misunderstanding i dont think that either. I believe a classic can either perfectly capture the sound/feeling of the era it was made in or sounds like it was released yesterday years after its release.

tht's one thinga i use to make sure it really was a classic if you can listen to an album 10 years later and it doesn't sound dated then it is true in my opinion though i agree illmatic is a classic but it didn't age well and sounds dated besides a few songs like to me all of onyx music sounds dated though at the time it was the shit

That's one of the knocks on Illmatic but it did capture the feel of that era though.

On another note bull6599 saved this thread from being locked.

It's a culture

A kid wearing an Adidas top like this with shell toes, a Fitted Cap, hanging out at a basketball court in Harlem, listening to The Slim Shady LP on his I-Pod, sagging his jean's, with his shoe laces tied a certain way, body covered with tattoos, earrings and a chain

That's Hip-Hop culture and even if the Music never existed anymore the culture will always live on a group of kid's hanging out in the project staircase just listening to Music and smoking weed as silly as it sounds that is Inner City street culture and as long as poor people exist that culture will never go away even if Rap Music stopped existing

People who think Illmatic doesn't have replay value just don't really get it. I've had that album for almost 10 years, and I still have a great time listening to it. One of the purest hip hop albums ever.
