nwa CREATED the market for rappers to sell huge amounts of records. nwa's controversial and ground breaking style of rap and image is what took hip hop from a small entreprenuership to a mass global marketing cash cow. it was nwa that made rebellious and curious suburban teens pay attention to rap music AND start consuming it. there are only 1 or 2 rap acts to ever go platinum before nwa. the beastie boys ... AND MAYBE ... MAYBE run dmc. each and every album that nwa ever created went PLATINUM PLUS during the time of its original release date and they are the first TO EVER do that in hip hop. before nwa rappers had party songs etc to help sell their records .. nwa was the first to sell off of content alone ... their first release straight outta compton WENT PLATINUM with no video on mtv or bet and absolutely no radio play.
NWA created the whole putting small towns on the map factor in hip hop ..... no one heard of compton period before nwa. after that many towns who you never even heard of could have rappers ... you no longer had to be from or go to a major city to be discovered

the reason i say technically nwa was the first is because before nwa there was the juice crew .... they had rappers such as big daddy kane, kool g rap, biz mark, masta ace, and one of the earliest super producers marley marl. they all went on to have successful careers but the juice crew was never signed as a group and never had a commercial release as THE JUICE CREW
but as a hip hop head i refuse to give nwa that title ... juice crew was doing it before a record deal was even realistic for an artist who wasnt curtis blow or run dmc
