Otto Greule Jr/Getty Images NFL Trade Rumors Ponder the Chances of Steve Smith Leaving Carolina Once Transaction Ban is Lifted
For years now, the Carolina Panthers' passing game has largely been a one-man show. That man, Steve Smith, managed to stay productive until last season, despite frequent double-teams, and constant attention from opponents' best cover corners.
Now, according to multiple media reports, the talented wideout could be heading out of Carolina.
While no one has said as much yet, they have reported that the former Pro Bowl wideout cleaned out both his locker and the luxury suite used by his family during games prior to the start of the lockout.
This is some of the most tangible evidence that Smith could be leaving Carolina that we've seen yet. It's clear he doesn't plan on being a Panther next season; if he did, why clean out your personal effects?

While it's unclear where Smith could land (there are plenty of teams in need of a wideout with Smith's talents, though), ESPN's Pat Yaskinas speculates that Smith could be worth a second or third-round pick for the Panthers, who are likely looking to start a full-on rebuilding effort under new coach Ron Rivera.
What's sad is that there was a time when Smith could possibly command much more than just a second or third-round pick. At one point, he was among the elite wideouts in the NFL, but back to back subpar seasons in Carolina (which may not have been his fault) have seen his stock take a big hit.
There's still plenty to like about the diminutive wideout, though; his toughness, speed and athleticism are among the best in the NFL, assuming your team can actually throw him the ball (something the Panthers haven't been capable of in three years).
In the end, it really wouldn't surprise me if Smith were dealt. He's been unhappy with the quarterback situation in Carolina for some time now, and is understandably fed up with the teams failure to find a viable second receiving option for him. It's time for Smith and the Panthers to part ways, and once the ban is lifted, Smith is an extremely likely trade candidate
