Steve Austin Criticises Younger Wrestlers, Talks About the Problems They Face

WWE Hall of Famer Steve Austin spoke out about the troubles facing younger WWE wrestlers today in a column for U.K. wrestling publication Fighting Spirit Magazine this month (via WrestlingInc).

Writing for the magazine, guest columnist Austin mainly complained about newly called up wrestlers lacking any real prerogative in the ring and relying too much on instructions:

Today's guys are very impressionable, and don't really call it in the ring anymore. Some of the guys don't know whether to s--t or wind their watch; when they get in the ring, they have some basics, but they've always been told exactly what to do before they go out there. Back in the day, we were calling it all in the ring; we didn't have anything to be nervous about, because we didn't have to remember anything. All I had to do was listen to a hellacious worker like Billy Joe Travis or Jimmy Jack Funk, trusting them to help lead me through it.

Austin also criticized WWE for bringing up newcomers to the main roster before they were ready:

The guys today are on a big stage, and none bigger than WWE. It's up to the promotion to bring these cats in light, establish them, and help them get over. You can't just bring in someone new and expect them to work a Wrestlemania calibre match right away.

Some thoughts on Austin's remarks.

The star is right to note that many younger wrestlers today do only know what WWE's rigid training system has taught them.

Considering the lukewarm state of the wrestling business and the company being the only real game in town (the perpetually struggling TNA cannot be seen as true competition), something like this was probably inevitable.

This isn't the '90s anymore. Wrestlers don't have a chance to hone their craft in places like ECW or WCW. No wonder we're generally seeing only one in-ring style and guys too hesitant to try anything new.

However, it's worth noting that WWE has made the effort in the past couple of years to sign more indie guys, like Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins, both of whom had wrestled all over the world prior to signing their WWE deals.

Hopefully, with the company's new approach to talent signings, the problem Austin is talking about will soon be rectified.

But certainly, the star is correct to point out that the company does have a bad habit of calling up inexperienced developmental workers long before they should.

Indeed, in the last couple of years fans have seen numerous FCW names placed on the main roster, only for them to disappear without a trace soon after (Mason Ryan, anyone?).

Ziggler seems to be the only dude that gets it...The Rock brigns attention to the sport and whenever there is attention to something ur doing it creates an opportunity...alot of people forget its about putting on a show and putting asses in seats and ratings in the top...a big name can do both that so why be mad and hate b/c they bringing in someone who can still do what u never could? makes no sense....ziggler seems to be a dude that has the head for the business....instead of pouting and being mad....get like him

and austins right some are pushed way too soon and other are held back way too long

Here is the latest on the status of the former ECW Arena.

Following the end of National Pro Wrestling day, Roger Artigiani, who had managed the operations of the former ECW Arena, and who had helped today's events move at the last minute to the Armory, was introduced. He congratulated 2 Cold Scorpio for winning the Rey de Voladores tournament, and stated that a banner for him in the Hardcore Hall of Fame will be hung when "The World's Most Famous Bingo Hall re-opens."

There had recently been movements legally to remove current leaseholder Joanna Pang from the venue. The venue was ripped down to the bare walls and has been empty and unused for over a year. The plan is to remodel the venue and open towards the end of 2013.

-- Saved By The Bell's Mr. Belding will team with The Big O and PWS Tag Team Champions The Phat Pack in an elimination tag match against Reality Check members Devon Moore, Damian Gibbs, D-Struction, and a fourth teammate to be named later on February 9th for Pro Wrestling Syndicate.

Fighting Spirit Magazine is featuring quotes from a recent article by WWE Hall of Famer "Stone Cold" Steve Austin in a recent issue of the magazine where Austin talks about WWE needing to better prepare younger wrestlers before they are put in high profile situations on television.

"Today's guys are very impressionable, and don't really call it in the ring anymore. Some of the guys don't know whether to shit or wind their watch; when they get in the ring, they have some basics, but they've always been told exactly what to do before they go out there. You can't just bring in someone new and expect them to work a Wrestlemania calibre match right away. If you give someone a monster push right off the bat, but don't give them the base knowledge, it makes no sense to wonder why they shit the bed. These kids are exposed after a few weeks of TV, because they don't have the experience of what to do in that situation. The more knowledge you have, the better chance you have of being successful."

Ring of Honor wrestlers Mark and Jay Briscoe are no longer scheduled to take part in a tryout camp with WWE in Orlando. Adam Cole, another ROH talent, is still expected to be involved.

-- Some new details have been revealed about the lawsuit WWE has filed against Solar Entertainment Corp. in the Philippines. The lawsuit, filed on 1/25, is in regards to the outlet as an international television partner with WWE. Both parties went into business back in October 2007 with the agreement expiring in March 2012. WWE claims Solar has failed to pay WWE what they are owed under separate agreements for WWE programming that would run on free TV, Pay Per View and a "2011 Deal Memo" for additional material that the two sides had been working on. WWE claims they are owed $960,105.92 and have yet to receive any of the money. They also noted they are owed an additional $21,601.92 in regards to the 2011 deal memo for a grand total of $981,707.84.

-- New WWE Champion Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson tweeted out a photo of him working out in a WWE ring with Michael McGillicutty (Joe Hennig). The Rock is now behind him and Triple H has reportedly always been a big backer as well.

According to a report, the current order of "major players" in WWE includes Vince McMahon (Chairman and CEO), Kevin Dunn (Executive Vice President, Television Production), George Barrios (CFO), Paul "Triple H" Levesque (Executive Vice President, Talent), Michael Luisi (President of WWE Studios, Executive Vice President, Business Development, General Counsel), Stephanie McMahon (Executive Vice President, Create) and Michelle Wilson (Chief Marketing Officer).

For salary estimates in 2012, Vince McMahon is listed at $1.1 million, Barrios at $575,000, Dunn at $800,000, Triple H at $500,000 and Wilson at $575,000.

Wrestling legend Sting was a guest on the WrestleShark and spoke about his loyalty to TNA and Dixie Carter, why he stayed with the company for the past several years and more. Here are some highlights:

Why Sting feels loyalty to TNA: "The group of men and women under the TNA roof, the fans, the brand, I just feel content here. The home has been good here; Dixie Carter, the Carter family have been great to work with over the years and Dixie is very persuasive."

Why Sting kept coming back to TNA: "Dixie was very persuasive, being willing to make it right in terms of scheduling, the time on the road, of course money is an issue, it just all came together. And I love the brand...that's all there is to it. It was like a now or never moment for me."

Sting on TNA going on the road and helping TNA become a household name: "I think if we go out on the road there is a lot of potential for that to happen."

Sting on his TNA Hall of Fame induction: "Very humbling...because there are so many other guys, the Samoa Joes, the A.J. Styles, Bobby Roode, James Storm, Jeff Jarrett, who were here before I was. They helped build a foundation for this company," Sting said. "I was kind of like ‘am I being put out to pasture here or what?' [laughs] plus I'm an active wrestler. So it seems kind of weird to be inducted into the Hall of Fame while you're still working."

The Undertaker is reportedly going back and forth about whether he will compete at WrestleMania 29. At this time, the plan is to have him wrestle CM Punk if he decides to work the show; if he decides not to then the creative team will have to make changes to booking plans in order to put CM Punk in a featured match.

With Team Rhodes Scholars announcing on Friday's SmackDown that they will no longer be teaming together, it appears another WWE tag team could be splitting up soon. The Prime Time Players could also be splitting up. There has been talk of Titus O'Neil going off on his own as Vince McMahon is a big fan of his. It's unknown what this would mean for Darren Young for he has not been nearly as impressive as O'Neil.

-- Goldust may finally get his match with Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania this year. McMahon was always against the idea, but the huge reaction that Goldust received at the Rumble may change his mind. We shall see.

At long last, Bruno Sammartino will come home to Madison Square Garden on the night before WrestleMania 29 to take his rightful place as a WWE Hall of Famer.

The longest-reigning WWE Champion of all time was announced Monday as the fourth inductee for the Hall's star-studded 2013 class. Sammartino will join fellow former WWE Champions Mick Foley and Bob Backlund and former Women's Champion Trish Stratus in sports-entertainment's most hallowed hall on April 6, 2013. (TICKETS AVAILABLE NOW) But for all the greats who have been and will be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, only Bruno lays claim to being the one true "Living Legend."

Sammartino’s induction has long been anticipated by a generation of WWE fans who grew up idolizing the Italian strongman. In an exclusive interview, Bruno revealed to WWE.com why he felt 2013 was the right time to finally enter the WWE Hall of Fame.

"Triple H contacted me and started telling me all the things that had changed and everything that was going on with WWE," Bruno said. "I started watching it after talking to him and when I saw it, I was very, very impressed."

For Triple H, the hall was incomplete without The Living Legend.

"I love the history of this business," Triple H said. "Without the history, there is no tomorrow. To look back on the history of WWE, one of the most important figures in the long story of where this all came from wasn't recognized. And that was Bruno."

Born in a small mountain town in Italy, Sammartino immigrated to Pittsburgh at age 15. After breaking world weightlifting records as a teenager, Sammartino was noticed by Vincent J. McMahon, who encouraged the impressive athlete to pursue a career in professional wrestling. He became an overnight sensation and on May 17, 1963, defeated "Nature Boy" Buddy Rogers in the old Madison Square Garden to become the second WWE Champion in history. Sammartino held the title for nearly eight years, by far the longest reign of all time — not just in WWE, but with regards to any sports-entertainment organization.

Bruno Sammartino became a household name throughout the 1960s and '70s by turning back rivals including Killer Kowalski, Gorilla Monsoon and George "The Animal" Steele. In early 1968, he headlined the first-ever wrestling event at the new and current Madison Square Garden. In all, Bruno sold out the building on an astounding 187 occasions and is partially responsible for it becoming The World's Most Famous Arena. It was there on Dec. 10, 1973, that Sammartino became the first-ever two-time WWE Champion and he held the title for an additional three-and-a-half years. On Aug. 9, 1980, Bruno main-evented an epic event in front of more than 35,000 people at New York City's Shea Stadium that broke box-office records.

"Arguably the biggest name ever in the history of the business is Bruno Sammartino," Triple H said. (Check back with WWE.com later in the week for our in-depth interview with both Sammartino and The Game.)

For many longtime fans, the WWE Hall of Fame was simply not complete until the beloved Bruno Sammartino was inducted. Now it will happen at the building where he achieved his finest moments. Tickets for the Induction Ceremony are on sale now and available at the MSG box office, online at Ticketmaster.com and various Ticketmaster outlets, or charge by phone at 800-745-3000. Ticket prices range from $50 to $150.

Triple H Talks On How WWE Has Made Amends With Bruno Sammartino

Posted by: Lee of WrestlingNewsSource.com on Feb 04 2013

Source: ESPN.com

Triple H spoke with ESPN in regards to the induction of Bruno Sammartino into the 2013 WWE Hall of Fame. Here are the highlights:

On why it was important to get Bruno Sammartino into the WWE Hall of Fame:

“From a legitimacy standpoint, it’s important for us to get Bruno in. He’s one of the biggest names there has ever been in the business. So for us to not have him in there, for the legitimacy of the whole thing, it was a major issue. For me, the more important thing was that nobody deserves to be recognized for being a big star and paving the way for the stars of today more than Bruno. Everything that we have today in the business, Bruno was a cornerstone of that foundation. He truly is a living legend. As we started getting into Hall of Fame season, it’s almost like this storyline wrote itself. To have Bruno Sammartino brought into the Hall of Fame in Madison Square Garden, a building he sold out more than anybody in the world, that’s a remarkable achievement. It was an opportunity to honor Bruno, but it was also an opportunity for our fans.”

On how WWE has made amends with Bruno over the issues that he had with their drug-testing and programming:

“There has been this bad blood between Bruno and the WWE for years, and we’re not trying to hide any of it, but I just felt like we are at a point where a lot of it can be resolved. Our wellness program and the way our programming is now, a lot of people are unaware of it, so I felt like if I could get Bruno on the phone and I could run down a list of those things that he didn’t like, I could show him how we changed. We’re PG, family-friendly entertainment with a wellness program that is truly based on the wellness of our performers. We want them to be healthy and live long, productive lives. So I just felt that if Bruno knew about those things, he might feel differently, and eventually, that’s what came to be.”

On helping Sammartino and Vince McMahon to mend their relationship that hasn’t existed for many years:

“Clearly, Vince knew about this right from the get-go, and when I said I wanted to reach out to Bruno, Vince was probably thinking, ‘Well, good luck with that,’” Levesque said. “So Bruno and I established this relationship and as we came to an understanding on all of this, Vince asked me, ‘Hey, do you think I should call Bruno? I’d like to talk to him.’ At the same time, Bruno said, ‘Do you think I should have a conversation with Vince?’ And I said no to both of them. I didn’t think it was right to do over the phone. They had bad blood for a long time, and we’ve all kind of buried the hatchet here, and it’s a new beginning and a fresh start and everybody is in a great place with this, but going back to what Bruno said about being old school, I think we should all get in the same room together and the two of them should look each other in the eyes and shake hands. This should be in person. I don’t think it’s right to do over the phone. They both agreed to do that, and while it hasn’t happened yet, Hall of Fame is probably where we’ll make that happen. Vince and Bruno will see each other for the first time in years and officially, in person, look each other in the eyes and bury that hatchet.”

On keeping Sammartino’s induction a secret:

“It’s not ‘Mission Impossible’ or anything like that, but to me, Bruno getting into the Hall of Fame in Madison Square Garden is the biggest induction we’ve ever done, and rightfully so. He deserves that. So to just have it leak out there, that would’ve been wrong. This is a huge moment in time, and a massive moment for our fans, for Bruno, and for WWE. This is the history of our business. Without Bruno Sammartino, we aren’t where we are today.”

Jericho on Bret's comments on HHH.

WWE Superstar Chris Jericho called in on his own to Busted Open with Dave Lagreca and Mike Riker to discuss Bret Hart's comments on Triple H. You can hear Busted Open every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on Sirius 92, XM 208 and online on Sports Zone.

Jericho on Bret Hart's comments on HHH: "It was funny because when I saw that comment that Bret had said, I was kind of surprised because I think that Triple H has had a lot of great matches, dozens of great matches. I could think of two or three that I was in with him myself, so, maybe, I don't know why Bret would say that, maybe it's still a little bit personal or some bad vibes or taste in his mouth from what happened years ago. But I'll tell you face to face that Triple H has had many great matches and I always enjoyed watching him work, even up to the match he had with Lesnar. I don't know if that was a great match, it was definitely a very good one, so I would definitely never ever bury Triple H's wrestling talent for sure I think he's one of the best we've ever seen."

What benefit does it have for Bret Hart to make those comments? "He's saying it just because, old, old, old wounds die hard, or whatever the cliché is. You know, I'm sure Bret has made his peace with Shawn over the Montreal Screw Job; maybe he still has some lingering issues with Triple H as part of that. I don't know, cuz I think Bret is very much one of my favorites of all time, one of my top two or three as a matter of fact, but maybe there's a little bit of bias in this or something like that for him to say that Triple H has had no great matches. Cuz I don't think anybody could ever say that he's had no great matches. You might say "well this guy's a jerk" or "I don't like him personally" or "backstage I don't like him" or "politically I don't like him", but there's one thing you can never doubt with Triple H and that's his wrestling ability, especially as a main event performer, like you said earlier, in the early 2000's as the top heel in the company, I think you could throw any baby face's name out there and you could probably match up a quote unquote great match that he had with that person, for sure.

"Triple H may be a little bit underrated as far as the amount of flak that he takes over the years, but, as a performer, I'll tell you straight up he was definitely one of the best, from that era and even up until last year. The match he had with Undertaker, the match he had with Undertaker the year before, both Wrestlemania matches, were both amazing matches. Maybe not the same levels as the ones Shawn had with him but definitely in the exact same ballpark. Triple H is just one of those guys, he's got it, he always has had it, he's a great ring general, he's very smart in the psychology of putting together his matches, believable when he works, so definitely definitely definitely.

Like I said, I could give you 3 matches that I had with him, personally that I thought were great. The Last Man Standing that we had in Dallas, the title match we had at State College where I won the title, and then the tag match with me and Benoit versus Triple H and Austin. All of them were what I would consider to be some of my best performances, some of my best matches that I ever had for sure."

Outside your matches with him, what do you think was his best match ever? Y2J – It's hard to say cuz there's just so many eras, like you said, I would have thought of the Three Stages of Hell with Austin, was a great one. I think he had a 60 minute Iron Man Match that's forgotten against The Rock where Shawn was the referee, that was great. I think the 3-way with Benoit and Shawn at Wrestlemania, whatever it was, was amazing. And I think the ones he had with Undertaker, both of those were great. But that's the thing, when you get a guy who's had as many great matches as he has, it's hard to just say here's one or here's two, you know. There's just so many. There's this one there's that one there's this one and that one, I mean the Batista Wrestlemania match was great as well. That's what makes a great worker, not just a short burst, but longevity of a career, 10-15 years of having great matches with a whole variety of different opponents and whole variety of styles. You know, that's what makes a great worker to me."

On his Royal Rumble appearance: "Y2J – Well it's funny because, 2 things about that was, one, I was so happy that it didn't leak. Like I thought for sure, sooner or later it's going to leak on a website or dirt sheet or somebody would hear something and it would get out. But nobody knew that I was there until the moment that music played. And I think that was such a cool vibe, that we could still surprise people, still surprise guys like you who have your finger on the pulse and have spies or contacts or sources. And that's what wrestling is all about. It's all about the surprise element that takes you back to when you were a kid. When I was a kid, we had no internet or no dirt sheets. All we knew, all I knew, was what was coming by promotions. And that's how we'd have a surprise. I think of when Dave Hebners evil twin brother Earl Hebner and they screwed Hulk out of winning the title. If you would have heard earlier today that Earl Hebners brother Dave was in the building and they're identical twins, it would have killed some of that magic. And that was cool for us to be able to do that at Royal Rumble and have a complete surprise, legitimate surprise. And then number two was, I didn't even think about it until afterwards, that I was in there for so long, like 48 minutes, or whatever it was. And Vince even asked me after "how did you stay in such good shape? I was like. I don't know, I'm not sure."

Word is that the fan voting for CM Punk's opponent was legitimate. WWE was planning for Punk to wrestle Randy Orton, but fan voting showed that Chris Jericho was a much more popular option. The company never expected Rey Mysterio to win and had him booked from the beginning to face Daniel Bryan.
