Fortunately, my experience with Africans and Caribbeans have been with those who think otherwise or are second generation kids who don't give a shit.

No, there aren't a lot of West Indians here--but there are a lot of Africans here--Nigerians, Ghanaians, and some Ethiopians. But there isn't really a lot of friction, at least, not that I'm aware of.

I'm assuming most people in Chicago really don't give a fuck, since African immigrant kids chill with AAs frequently here and nobody trips because it's trivial to do so.

According to that statistics, how many immigrants have actually "made it"?

I read something that was saying that a lot of immigrants are still poor as fuck and barely live above the poverty line since they came here and comprise one-fourth of the impoverished population (first generation).

If you look at the black populations of top universities in America you'd find that West Indians and Black Africans are overrepresented

i think part of has to do with culture, like most have the immigrant work ethic and are more likely to come from two parent homes

Yes, I also read that Africans are most likely to be the most educated portion of the immigration population when they get here. But I also read in "Post-Black" by Ytasha Womack that some of them mafuckas who were highly educated and then immigrated to the states ended up driving cabs or doing other types of menial work when they got here because the degrees that they received in their countries virtually meant nothing in America.

Also, I went to school with Africans at my college who came here to be educated--the ones who came here were affluent to a great extent, and still retained a great amount of class privilege as opposed to Black Americans who were from low-income backgrounds.

So, it all depends, but I still think that immigrants who think that shit will be hunky dory when you get here just if you work hard aren't completely seeing the bigger picture all the time.
