In the game you can breed Pokémon and when an egg is made you have walk around to hatch it. Something like 5000 in-game steps hatch most eggs.

You still haven't played?

You have to walk a minimum of 2 miles to hatch a egg

He's talking about the actual game boy games when you gotta walk around with the character to hatch the eggs.
