Might get me a job in IT. Company would then pay for me to go get my certifications.

I'm studying for the CompTIA A+ right now, I'm mad I took this long to get into IT.

A+ is a waste of time unless you like being poor. If you want to get into IT and want to start out making more than $10-$13/hr, holler at this:
https://www.redhat.com/en/services/certification/rhcsa

Red Hat Certified Linux Administrator will get you in the door for far more money than an A+ ever will. Cop a used PC (minimum Pentium D or 64 bit Pentium 4 'cause RHEL7 only supports 64 bit machines right now), install CentOS 7 until you can afford a Red Hat 7 license (CentOS is just Red Hat enterprise linux with all of the trademarked logos removed), and get started studying.

let me expand on to that statement:

You can get running with Linux with VirtualBox on your current PC. Personally I recommend doing it on a separate machine, but if you're really strapped for cash or don't want to invest the $50-$75 it'll take to get a used desktop then download and install VirtualBox and the Extension pack for it.

Once installed, download the ISO for CentOS7 from one of these mirrors:http://isoredirect.centos.org/centos/7/isos/x86_64/

The file you want is the 4GB iso (CentOS-7-x86_64-DVD-1511.iso).

Follow this tutorial to get your first CentOS vm running:https://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Virtualization/VirtualBox/CentOSguest

Once you have the OS built, log in and open a terminal (like a cmd box in Windows) and go through the basics found here:
http://manuals.bioinformatics.ucr.edu/home/linux-basics

Since most Linux distributions have adopted SystemD recently, it's good to go through the basics for that as well:https://www.digitalocean.com/commun...s-working-with-services-units-and-the-journal

get familiar with everything and just do the shit over and over for retention. Once you have this going jump right in and cop a RHCSA study guide and use it with your Linux install.

Finally registered for my ccent on the 24th after a 10 month hiatus, waiting on a call back for a position in the noc.

I need advice on building a lab for the CCNP

We been using gns3 a lot in this fourth cisco class. I got the ios image for a 7200 series cisco router it's really all you need for gns3.

Switches ios images don't work so well with gns 3 so you can probably just buy a couple used 3560 layer 3 switches on ebay and be set with that and gns3.

This shit is really nifty and almost makes buying hardware obsolete

old post but I had to chime in on this...

Personally I prefer to use hardware. I'm buying two more 1721's and a pair of 2950's to get my CCNA lab going.

if anybody here has network security experience and want to work for the hottest network security company right now let me know. I work at Palo Alto Networks and they're always looking for new talent. Plus you can get CCIE level salary

I been thinking about doing that next, would you do CCNA security or security+ ?

ehh... if you want to go the cisco route then do the ccna security, otherwise id just do sec+

depends on if you want to go the cisco route or just general network security. ccna security is cisco based...they show you everything from a cisco standpoint. personally i did my ccna security cause i needed it to get my ccnp security. its up to you though... if you want to switch to another vendor id just do security +

I need advice on building a lab for the CCNP

for the CCNA you can get away with using packet tracer

CCNP... you can buy the physical equipment or use GNS3 (free). or you can use a vendor and purchase rack time... the vendors have all the equipment needed. Id use ipexpert.com or ine.com

I'm in the last class now for ccna and it's all WAN stuff it doesn't work really at all in packet tracer . GNS3 is actually using the real ios

I'll copy the image to a thumb drive and upload here after next class

here you go,my teacher is the plug!
http://www.mediafire.com/download/d0vbk0neh2bregf/CiscoIOS.zip

one of them is a 1841 router ios ,one is 2960 switch image , and the other is a 7200 router image(its a beast)

download gns3 and play around with these using it. like i said the switches are kinda iffy so if that 2960 isnt performing well with it you should just get a real 3560 (or 2)

we been doing some cold shit with it, you can add your pc as a cloud an add the local area connection/nic to it and your pc will be on the virtual network with the gns3 devices so you can ping tracert etc to the ios devices

@Thereal_ba @Los216 @mrrealone @Ghostdenithegawd
http://www.mediafire.com/download/w2wkd6rhdd6jnc8/c7200-advipservicesk9-mz.152-4.S5.bin

@Thereal_ba use this one instead, the other one had ios version 12.4 that doesnt have security features so the crypto commands wont work for ipsec vpns and other stuff like that. this one is ios ver 15.1 so it has all that stuff unlocked

BTW, take the ACE exam. its free and you can take it online. that would be a plus too

thats for anybody wanting to get into the network security field
