I hate help desk already

You got your foot in the door with that helpdesk job. Now it's only a matter of how long it takes you to get out. No shame in only staying 6 months to a year if there's no real chance of growth.

how saturated is the market ? is this guy full of shit? can someone expect to get a job that isnt in the help desk with a ccna and work your way up? im referring to south florida

Can't speak for south FL but I'm in central FL(Tampa). I've been on the linux administration side of things so it could be different for other parts of IT but most jobs I've been contacted about there always seems to be a lack of qualified candidates. That's allowed me to get decent jobs with much less than the required amount of experience.

If you are good with CMD\Powershell, would that put you in a comfortable area to learn Linux? I've played with it a bit, but i haven't done too much past installing Ubuntu.. How deep do you get with Linux? I was going to set up a test web server at one point but i already had it working well on Windows so i never got around to it.

Man to be honest I've been avoiding anything microsoft like the plague ever since I started working with linux so I don't know much about powershell. I do know they tried to put some linux commands in their to make linux guys feel more comfortable with powershell but nobody is fallin for that shit. If you're in a position to use powershell at work then I'd say go with it just because it's an opportunity but linux is completely different. The way It was put to me by a windows administrator is that it's a lot easier to transition from being a linux admin to being a windows admin than the other way around because linux forces you to learn how to do everything the right way.

Personally I probably know more about linux then a lot of people with more experience then me because I've been living and breathing that shit for the past 3-4 years. From a systems administrators perspective, you need to know how to do everything from the command line since servers don't usually have a desktop environment.

Those are the resources I started off learning from. Once you get more comfortable with the command line, I'd recommend installing arch linux, gentoo and linux from scratch to get a better understanding of how the operating system works.

school me on equipment for making my own lab for ccna practice, i was reading techexams.net and they pretty much suggested getting 3 1841s and 3 2960 or 2950 switches, i checked ebay and isnt sure whats quality and what isnt.

all 1841s/2960s/2950s on ebay are the same ? i seen one 2960 for 50, and another for 260.

yea 3 routers and 3 switches are pretty much what youre gonna need

, maybe a 1941 and 2 1841s because the 1841s only have 2 ethernet ports

maybe a layer 3 switch

A month in and i already hate this.

I am trying to keep hush about it but I will never do help desk/technical support again. The worse position I've ever took in my life...real serious right now.
