It's impossible to listen to an album like "Ready To Die" and find no emotion in it. I mean "Suicidal Thoughts" alone is more emotional than a lot records in Hip Hop. Both Biggie LP's are filled with emotion. The problem is some of you have an issue with emotion that has negativity. Not all emotions are positive or convey position messages. Emotion is a broad brush. Biggie did a great job of convey the emotion of fear "Warning", depression "Everyday Struggle", "Ready To Die". Even the emotion of making it in life "Juicy". "Life After Death" had some amazing emotional records like "Miss U, Sky's the Limit and My Downfall". Now Jay gave you emotion from the jump also like "Regrets" on "Reasonable Doubt". I mean i'm trying to understand the question of the thread? Cause is this to say Pac was more lyrical than Big and Jay cause his records had more emotion?, I don't know about that. Also the Dictionary does not fly when defining Hip Hop. A majority of Hip Hop Slang is not even considered words in the dictionary.
So Yes though and aspect of Lyricism is defined as conveying emotion, Hip Hop makes it's own definitions and lyricism in Hip Hop is defined as the way the emcee puts his words together, with wordplay and metaphors. Sure Emotion is apart if but most lyricist didn't need to convey strong emotion to be Lyrical. NaS wasn't every emotional on "ILLmatic" outside of "One Love" yet it's one of the most lyrical albums ever. Canibus is very rarely emotional on his songs and he's one of the best lyricist. Dictionaries don't define Hip Hop, We Do, The Culture does and the culture defines lyricism as more than just convey emotion. The biggest reasons Biggie is one of the most beloved rappers is Most fans "FELT" what he had to say which means they are emotionally attached to his words. Jay though not as emotional as Biggie or Pac managed to grow into more emotional records as his career went on. NaS is the same. Pac was emotional from jump but wasn't as lyrical, he grew as a lyricist. At the end of the day Biggie and Jay Z wouldn't be as Iconic as they are if people didn't FELL There music, therefor they do convey emotion.
