Obviously Goddell has once again overstepped his boundaries on this case
Sources: McCarron files grievance vs. Bengals
Cincinnati Bengals quarterback AJ McCarron, at the center of headlines this past week, soon will be the center of headlines again.
McCarron has filed a grievance against the Bengals and is awaiting a ruling from an arbitrator that will determine whether he is an unrestricted or restricted free agent after this season, sources tell ESPN.
The ruling in the case, expected sometime this winter, could determine whether the Browns are able to sign McCarron to a potentially lucrative contract without any compensation to Cincinnati or whether Cleveland would have to trade for his rights.
The Browns agreed to send second- and third-round picks to the Bengals in a trade that would have sent McCarron to Cleveland on Tuesday. But the NFL denied the deal because Cleveland failed to notify the league before the 4 p.m. ET trade deadline.
Cincinnati likely would place a first-round tender on McCarron as a restricted free agent, sources told ESPN, which would make it difficult to simply sign him to an offer sheet.
McCarron's grievance dates to his rookie season in 2014, when the Bengals drafted him in the fifth round. McCarron initially passed his post-draft physical, but the Bengals placed him on the non-football injury list (NFI) at the start of training camp due to a shoulder issue.
In McCarron's opinion, he was healthy enough to come off the NFI list during training camp, which would have counted his rookie season toward his free agency. But Cincinnati didn't add McCarron to its active roster until Dec. 9, which was too late for him to accrue a season toward his free agency.
Under terms of the collective bargaining agreement, a player receives an accrued season that counts toward free agency if he was eligible to play in six regular-season games.
The arbitrator's decision will impact the free-agent quarterback class of 2018 and could help influence who is playing the position in Cleveland. The Browns also could decide to turn their attention this offseason to Bengals starting quarterback Andy Dalton, who played under Cleveland coach Hue Jackson in Cincinnati.
Dalton is finished with the guaranteed money portion of his contract; his $13.7 million salary for next season is not guaranteed, and Cincinnati can trade or release him without any salary-cap charges, a review of his deal showed.
Dalton always enjoyed playing for Jackson and Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden, who both previously served as offensive coordinators in Cincinnati and who both could be in need of a quarterback. Both Jackson and Gruden liked Dalton as well, a source told ESPN.
Washington could be in need of a starting quarterback if Kirk Cousins, who is on an expiring contract, leaves as a free agent.
Depending on what happens with McCarron's grievance against the Bengals, Cincinnati could have offers for two of its quarterbacks this offseason.

He better tighten up. That Arab owner will trade his ass for cash considerations.
Sources: Garoppolo gives Niners QB options
While the San Francisco 49ers' trade with the New England Patriots for Jimmy Garoppolo might suggest that they would enter into a long-term partnership with the quarterback, in reality, he serves as a placeholder at the position until they get to know each other, league sources told ESPN.
The Niners traded a second-round pick Monday night to the Patriots for Garoppolo.
With a potential pick among the top two in the 2018 NFL draft and roughly $60 million in salary-cap space in the offseason, the 49ers could decide to draft their quarterback of the future or use some of their money to sign a free-agent quarterback such as Washington's Kirk Cousins, sources said.
If the 49ers do not sign Garoppolo to a long-term deal, they could use a franchise tag on him and then dangle him to the highest bidder in a trade. If they were to do that, other teams would be interested, sources said, and they could possibly get back more than the second-round pick they surrendered.
Garoppolo started New England's first two games in 2016 during Tom Brady's four-game Deflategate suspension before spraining his shoulder. Garoppolo was 42-of-59 passing with four touchdowns and zero interceptions in the two wins for the eventual Super Bowl champions.
It has been the only significant playing time in the NFL for Garoppolo, a second-round pick in the 2014 draft by the Patriots out of Eastern Illinois.
Source: Zeke's lawyers try to settle with NFL
While Ezekiel Elliott continues to insist that he is fighting for his name, his attorneys have attempted to settle his case with the NFL and have the Dallas Cowboys running back's six-game suspension reduced, a source close to the situation told ESPN.
It's unclear how many games they have proposed to the NFL, but neither the league nor the NFLPA intends to settle this case and have Elliott's suspension reduced at this time, sources said.
Elliott received a six-game suspension on Aug. 11 for a violation of the NFL's personal conduct policy related to domestic violence allegations by a former girlfriend. He was never charged with a crime by the Columbus, Ohio, authorities who investigated the allegations.
On Friday, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals granted a request for an administrative stay to the NFL Players Association on Elliott's behalf.
The decision means Elliott's six-game suspension is on hold once again and he will play Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs. The 2nd Circuit said its brief order does not constitute a resolution on the merits of the court case.
A panel of federal judges will convene this week to hear Elliott's request for an injunction that would overturn Judge Katherine Polk Failla's ruling from Monday.
Elliott could still start serving the suspension as early as this week if the ruling is not in his favor.
Watson may have initially hurt knee in Seattle
Doctors and trainers who have reviewed the video of last Sunday's Texans-Seahawks game believe Houston quarterback Deshaun Watson initially injured his right knee in the fourth quarter and could have even torn his ACL in that game.
The Texans still think Watson suffered the torn ACL on Thursday, but are aware of and curious about the hit their quarterback absorbed Sunday, per team sources.
With the Seahawks leading Houston 27-24, Seahawks defensive end Frank Clark jumped over Texans running back Lamar Miller and rolled up on Watson, who immediately grabbed his right knee on the play. Watson finished the game, didn't complain about the injury after it, and did not get treatment on it last week, per sources.
Watson then fell to the ground in practice on Thursday, when Texans trainers determined their quarterback suffered a season-ending torn ACL. Watson has not decided when to have surgery, but it is considered an eight- to nine-month recovery, per a source, though Watson made it back from this injury in college in five months.
Doctors and physical trainers who reviewed Clark's hit on Watson said the quarterback planted and then went to an internal rotation of his femur with stress on his knee -- the makings of an ACL injury.
"I can't be 100 percent sure," one doctor said of the chances that Watson tore his ACL against Seattle, "but I wouldn't be surprised. Something happened as he grabbed his knee. And if you look at it in slow motion, one mechanism of injury is there."
Doctors and trainers said they have seen athletes play full games on torn ACLs only to complain about knee pain later. So while many believe Watson tore his ACL on a run-option play during Thursday's practice, it's possible he initially injured his ACL and possibly even tore it last Sunday in what turned out to be the final game of Watson's rookie season.
What makes it all the more impressive is that if his ACL was injured or even torn on the play against Seattle, Watson thrived down the stretch playing hurt.
After hurting his knee, Watson completed 4-of-5 passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran the ball once for 8 yards. And though no one can say for sure, Watson did it with an injured knee, one that could have even had an injury as significant as a torn ACL.
Doctors also said it's possible that the hit Watson took last Sunday affected the knee to the point that it made it ripe for the ACL to later be torn, though no one ever will be able to prove it. But one doctor pointed to the case of Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill playing on a compromised knee before it gave out during a training camp practice last summer.
During his freshman season at Clemson in 2014, Watson played with a torn ACL in his left knee, coach Dabo Swinney said at the time.
