2. She DEFENDED Dan Barislow in the second of three pro leagues since 1999. His reputation as a garbage owner was well-known. In fact, her and Hope Solo BOTH defended him. 4. Canada was the ONLY serious nation to bid on this event. Their taxpayers are TRYING to support women's sports but the truth is this event is not more important than other men's sports like football. Edmonton was the last CFL team to go to turf and they were actually CRITICIZED for not doing it sooner as the weather was so bad you needed real long cleats to play football. Their climate calls for turf.
5. Turf is far better than the garbage grass fields at a lot of high school fields. This is really about trying to outlaw turf at any level. Tell that to the taxpayers. High school girls soccer is only the #4 sport in participation according to NFHS.org. The three sports above girls soccer (basketball, volleyball, and track) all compete on harder surfaces. It is well known that volleyball can adversely impact a woman's knees, and technology has helped mitigate that to some point. But that's an an assumed risk. Been trying to get turf at our local fields for 15 years because it's light-years better than the fields on now, ruined by heavy-ass football players. One hard rain and games are cancelled. If you want grass-only fields, YOU pay for them. And grass sod on turf (which she actually called for once) is WORSE than turf.
Now, I do believe that future men's World Cup bids should include requirements to host the Women's World Cup a year later, and in the future, that will likely mean grass, although it's not certain. And turf fields do need to employ more environmentally-friendly technology. One company called GeoTurf USA actually used crushed coconut shells and cork as infill, not rubber. It works, and better ideas will come. But this was well-known for a year.
If she was really serious about hating turf, why is there no boycott of the current pro league? Oh yeah, there would be no women's pro soccer. They're not building women's-soccer-specific-stadiums. Equal opportunity does not mean equal outcome.
Every time she opens her mouth, she insults the very taxpayers who are allowing this event to happen. Let me assure Canadian sports fans she doesn't speak for all of us and we appreciate your sacrifice to host this event.
