There was more to The Matrix than just the visual effects - you had the script, the bat crazy directors, the perfect actors for the role, the action choreography that was still pretty new to Western audiences, the film score, the set design, the cinematography, etc. The film is a product of its time and was a lightning in a bottle moment where everything aligned perfectly. Anything else following its footsteps will never match the original film no matter how hard they try.

Nothing is sacred at all in Hollywood. In 1999 we had WB investing in The Matrix, and in 2017 we have WB investing in a reboot of The Matrix. Hollywood is shit out of ideas.

Don't do it without the Wachowskis. I mean the story by it's own nature lends itself to a reboot (7 incarnations of the Matrix and counting as of the trilogy) but without the Wachowskis it will be guaranteed shit. At least with them it could be interesting even if poorly executed like the sequels.

I thought Speed Racer and Bound were pretty dope. Everything else...not so much but they know what to do with their matrix universe more than anyone else.

Their animatrix collection proved that there is still a lot of world building you can pull off from this universe without just mining the original movie for goodies like Star Wars has been doing.
