I like ode and jam the most, but I feel like most of the tracks could be pushed further... your sounds could be manipulated more to make them sound less stock (like the piano on ode)... or add some samples like you did on gang...

Check out this track from my homie Vic DiBia$e. I did the beat, but I think I recorded the beat a little low.

my fellow beatmakers/producers, i need yall to lend me ur ears.

this is a result of studying the mixing and mastering tutorials i posted on the last page in this thread, i went back and did more extensive eq'ing on a beat(before hand i just used the basic 3 band eq on the mixer on a few sounds i thought needed it) and also tried my hand at mastering, i think i got a good sounding mix and master but i need opinions from others, i wanna know what yall think of the beat but moreso, what yall think of the mix, sho preciate it if u can.

one version is my normal mix, another is one i tried better eq'ing and another is one i tried to master, lemme know which has the best quality, clarity, and bump etc

The mastered one sounds better to me...

I'm more interested in how/why you mastered an instrumental and differentiated it from the one you said eq'd a little more. Everybody likes the mastered version better which is interesting. But I can't tell the difference. Like all my listens, I'm on my phone tho.

before we go any further... i only know how to make these sound good to me. when i put em up against people aiming for the "industry sound" with all the polish, technically, i lose everytime. but i'm nice w/these.

define the bold for me....im interested in your definition. And how your music isn't "industry sound"

i mean that crystal clear, glossy, ready to be released on a major sound. like, "turn it all the way up and it doesnt sound messy" sound. i know for a fact i don't have an industry sound cause i don't know how to master like that, and for the most part, i haven't bothered to learn. i just make beats, rap, and try to blend the shit together as best i can without too much clipping, or sounds getting canceled out.

I ask because your beats sounded somewhat clear, kinda crisp. Thin, but still clean. So Im interested in what people consider to be industry sound or mastered, etc.

What I found most interesting was how Bob Powers, Skeff Anselm, Guru, etc, help craft a "sound" and then it became known as the "industry sound". I think at the time they were engineering or mastering albums, they were doin exactly what you do with "making it sound good to you".

i doubt any of us in here actually have the "know-how" to master any beat or song. But really as long as youre not clipping, your music can be played on any system without sounding like shit.

i.e. Lean Wit It, Rock Wit It & Can't Tell Me Nothin' vs. Bonita Applebum & I Believe I Can Fly

all got radio play, all have totally different qualities in their mixes for radio and their albums.

honestly man, if you say you make beats for yourself and that sound good to you, then hey, it dont even matter what i meant.

my point is to open the dialogue on what the industry sound is, who/what determines it.....shit like that.

Idk who you think "we" is. But is it gloss because you say it's gloss or that's what someone told you? That's my point. But I'll digress from any further discussion about that with you.

But when I said thin. I say it in the sense that your joint sounded cold. Maybe that's how you intended I'm assuming. Idk. Again. My opinion.

i "mastered" it to try to achieve a fuller sound, tryna reach that so called "professional level" sound in my mind i suppose, my last mixtape i dropped on here had a real clear sound i thought but still wasnt quite pro level and the beats ive made since sounded good on my woofers and monitors, but on computer speakers it was like i couldnt feel the full force of the drums like i could with other songs, so i finally looked at the mixing and mastering tutorials i saw on youtube and tried my luck at creating my own way from there, me personally i think the eq version sounds clean and the mastered sounds clean and full

Sounds good. Let's talk your pre-mastering session. I know I read somewhere a lot of engineers prefer -3db to -6db of headroom.

What do you (or anyone else in this thread for that matter) prefer? And why?
