Track I just finished. Play it on the loudest volume.

I've never seen Jaws, but I know the sound a shark makes when there's blood or a swimming virgin in the water. I pulled up the soundtrack and started cutting...

One thing I noticed is that the end of the composition is a melody that sounds like Michael Jackson's Heal the World. Out of curiosity, I searched to see if Michael had a link to Spielberg and came across a hilarious article written by CNN at the height of The King of Pop's crucifixion. It says that Michael once paid a voodoo priest $150,000 to put a curse on the director, among others. Also, he was up for the part of Peter Pan in Spielberg's Hook, but ended up turning it down when he heard about the "growing up" premise of the film. Either way, Michael was a fan at one point, and I wouldn't be surprised if he sampled the melody and got away with not crediting John William's score...

I had been looking for a reason to use the beginning break from When the Levee Breaks by Led Zepplin, ever since Rick Rubin repurposed it for the Beastie Boy's So Whatchu Want. Maybe I have a thing for Rock drums with hard-hitting snares. I threw some 808's on 'em and it sounded epic...

Progression is always an element in my beats. I hate the typical verse - hook - verse - hook- verse-hook arrangement that's so popular among songsmiths. Where's the innovation? Where's the climax? I'll probably have more bridges than hooks throughout my career.

this is what i always like about producers like the Neptunes and Dr. Dre. maybe its because they have some musical training outside of beat making but they incorporate things like bridges etc...

we need more of that in hip hop, however, people always seem to want to "mix" other genres into hip hop rather than advance hip hop itself if you know what i mean

I feel you... a lot of hip hop songs that try to blend rock end up sounding like a spoof, rather than taking elements of rock and making them hip hop... I think it's the combination of what people perceive hip hop is and what people think is rock, when both genres have come a long way from "Walk This Way"...

We all know the IC Talent subforums are dead so I felt it would be a good idea to have a thread on producing in the Reason. I know there's a few out there that produce or rappers looking for production so in this thread we can network, discuss, share tips etc.

Here's a good facebook group for finding samples:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/vinyldom/

anyone can join it^

And to kick things off, what are your top 10 producers and why?

1 )Kanye West (sampling, innovation)

2) The Neptunes (musicality, minimalism, composition, songwriting, use of hardware)

3) No ID (sampling, versatility, digging)

4) Just Blaze (sampling, drums)

5) Organized Noize/Earthtone III (versatility, musicality, songwriting, creativity, live instrumentation etc)

6) RZA (sampling, innovation)

7) DJ Premier (drums, encyclopedic vocal samples, digging)

8) Timbaland (drums, creativity, composition, vocal recording, versatility)

9) Ski Beatz (jazzy sampling and live instrumentation composition)

10) Rashad Thomas (composition, songwriting, J Dilla-esque samples, versatility, use of hardware, live instrumentation)

11). Dr. Dre (innovation, synths/keyboard playing, composition, songwriting, mixing)

12) Swizz Beatz (simplicity, verstatility, innovation)

i wuz readin some article that was recommending the krk rokit monitors... dunno if it was the generation 2, or 3 but they both seem affordable... but I cant afford them right now...

word, thats what i see on most lists, my budget a lil too tight for those tho lol, also tryna get a keyboard controller so that makes it tighter

reading the feedback on some of the pairs of monitors for home studio guys on a budget on musicians' friend gives me mixed signals on their capabilities to help with mixing, i might need to go that route and hope for the best until i can upgrade tho

Gotta disagree. I think it's really about room treatment fate you've found a reliable pair. The sonic differences in a lot of monitors are things only an audiophile would notice. But nowadays a nigga hear something someobody else said and it's their opinion too. I will say that, from experience and a few of my producer homies, m-audio bxa5's are some of the shittiest joints in the market. They sound ok. But it's really just a low quality build and faulty wiring.

Oh and I thought this was funny
