mud-2012-poster-691x1024.jpg

Mud is a 2012 American coming-of-age film written and directed by Jeff Nichols. The film stars Matthew McConaughey, Tye Sheridan, Sam Shepard, and Reese Witherspoon.

Two teenage boys encounter a fugitive and form a pact to help him evade the bounty hunters on his trail and to reunite him with his true love.

follow up from the director of 'Take Shelter',i went into this one with high hopes and didn't come out disappointed.McConaughey is back on that form that makes me want to check out everything he does,some of his performances lately have been great,the main kid in this movie put in his work too.really impressed with everything about this movie.

(GRADE = C) Well what can I say. Some characters you just love so you will watch them to the end. This is why I watched "Rambo IV" or "Rocky 6" or "Indy 4" or "Lethal Weapon 4" and I will probably watch an old Arnold in the next Conan movie. Bruce Willis as John Mcclain is no different. I was the tender age of 7 when "Die Hard" came out and it was an iconic action film. By the time "Die Hard 2: Die Harder" dropped, I was about 10 years old and I actually went to the theater to see it. Loved it. Then by the time I was 15, "Die Hard With A Vengeance" came out and completely blew me away and I watched that one on the Big Screen.

To me The Die Hard Trilogy is a Classic film trilogy. Sadly "Die Hard 4: Live Free or Die Hard" was very uneven and the bad guy wasn't that great. The Father/Daughter storyline drags it down also. This brings up to today. "A Good Day To Die Hard" or "Die Hard 5". Finds John still with the NYPD. After fighting Terrorist in L.A., D.C. twice and NYC. John finds himself going to Russia. After one of his guys in the department find out his son was in Russian getting arrested. John decides to check on his estranged son. The movie takes no time to get things going. It had action all throughout non-stop.

The problem with the film was the Son and John didn't have great chemistry and the father/son arguments were very corny in parts. But the Bad guys are Hard body and again the Action delivered and that's what I want from a Die Hard movie. So even though here in the U.S. it didn't do that great at the box office. It still grossed over 300 Million Worldwide. Because of that success Bruce Willis will be doing one last Die Hard film called "Die Hardest". Overall "Die Hard 5" is the weakest of the series but still worth a watch. John Mcclain still has some gas in the tank.

(GRADE = B+) JJ ABRAMS is BACK with the sequel to his 2009 breakout hit reboot "Star Trek" which was a prequel to the original Star Trek TV Series. Many felt that movie was more "Star Wars" than "Star Trek" for it's increase in action but the film was a success. 4 years later the sequel "Into Darkness" is released. Wow, it was a really good sequel. Even if you aren't a huge Star Trek fan like the 1st film you can enjoy this without knowing all the history. This film picks up a few years later from the 1st film and the crew of the Enterprise is on training mission to get them ready for that Legendary 5 Year journey they took on the original show. Then all of the sudden a terrorist shows up and starts wreaking havoc.

The Star Fleet then gives Kirk and his crew orders to track this terrorist down which leads us to the heart of the movie. I thought it was a strong sequel, way darker than the 1st film. The stakes were raised dramatically for Kirk and the crew. The space action was so on point it was dope. The whole Space suit scene was epic. It payed homage to older Star Trek films and even had a Millienium Falcon Star Wars homage. Dude playing Kirk and Spock were great, you can really see them as being younger versions of Leonard Nemoy and William Shatner. The rest of the crew did well but the Bad Guy played by Benedict Cumberbatch stole the movie with his voice, dialog and he kicked some ass. Also unlike IM3, the TWIST here actually worked:

The Main Bad Guy is actually KHAN from the Classic film "Star Trek Wrath of Khan", this movie is basically his origin story. So they stayed true to the character and what his motivations are so they honored the original character very well. Original Spock also makes an appearance again in the film.

So again thumbs way up for me, best film of the summer thus far. I was very impressed with the whole film and again you just don't expect to see a Star Trek movie be this action packed. Star Trek is a cerebral series with action on the side. So JJ really did a great job here. Check it out.

(GRADE= A + CLASSIC) After Watching "Into Darkness" I had to revisit this Classic Sci-Fi sequel from my childhood. After "Star Trek The Motion Picture" got lukewarm reviews though it was a success at the box office. They changed directors for the sequel and the result is one of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time. "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" is everything you want in a sequel. The crew of the enterprise is in more termiol and the Khan is relentless for his revenge on Kirk.

The movie came out in 82 but I remember watching it growing up in the 80's. The Ear Worms used the scare the shit out of me when I was a kid, lol. Overall watching it again after these years was pretty good. Love the dialog in the film and the twist. I suggest everyone check this film out after watching "Into Darkness" they really do compliment each other. But it's a good film and probably the best film of the original Star Trek movies. Khan was ruthless.

i'm ethnocentric & for the most part stick to american movies, or at least english speaking movies. i'm tryna find some foreign stuff to get into. i thought i should start with oldboy & the raid: redemption since a lot of people on here talked about it.

if you can stomach (and enjoy) oldboy then you should be good with most foreign films,Japan and Korea have some messed up films out there lol.But i prefer foreign cinema to hollywood stuff,its interesting to learn about all these other cultures and also how they envision their film making teaches you a lot.A lot of the more interesting directors in hollywood today tend to be foreign and i always check out their previous work,you find some gems every now and again.

some recommendations -

Welcome to Dongmakgol - it's a dramedy about 2 sets of soldiers from north and south korea who get stuck together in a remote village whose inhabitants know nothing about a war.Its filmed in an almost fantasy kind of way which gives it some charm rather than being serious all the time.

Timecrimes - Spanish time travel/sci-fi film,hard to give much away about this one since the story loops the same hour in one day of a guy who happened to walk into the woods......and the shit just kind of kicks off from there lol..i need to watch this again,was trippy as hell.

A Bittersweet Life - Really stylish and violent korean film about an enforcer (who covers as a hotel manager) who by making some bad decisions get's himself into some heat from all angles .Koreans for some reason tend to dish out revenge flicks like nothing and this is one of the best imo.

Watched the Great Gatsby the other day. Good film, dope visuals. Shit makes bein' rich look even more fun than I already kno' it is. Di Caprio is a dope actor. probably won't see a better adaptation of the book than this

@vader

damn i haven't seen pan's labyrinth yet. i'll check that & the factory out good drops.

killing them softly is about these smackheads that rob a mob poker game & then a hitman (brad pitt) has to clean it up by finding the dudes that robbed it, talk to the guy who ran the game, etc. it was pretty slept on when it came out. not a masterpiece, but it's a good watch. it's all in the backdrop of obama winning the election & fixing the economy so it weaves the two worlds together. had some nice dialogue & cinematography too.

@lazypakman

yea i'm not looking for anything too crazy to start off...i might hold off on old boy for a little bit. a bittersweet life sounds dope tho thanks.

Hamburger Hill. Always liked this one but a lotta cheese between the action.

Dragon. Was really good up until the last 30 minutes. Had a nice horror feel to it with some kungfu to top it off. Spent the whole time thinking the guy was gonna flip out and kill everybody, but then they give him some weak back story with other random garbage thrown in. Definitely could have left out the little side story with the detective too. Guy was a villain for no reason. Took me out the movie giving me info that wasn't gonna pay off later. Mutilation really messed up the fight scenes too.

The Human Resources Manager. Good road trip drama. Netflix description was all over the place though. Switch between subs and english was a little off too.

Just got back from watching Star Trek Into the Darkness pretty much everything Rap Mastermind said is legit...movie was dope as fuck on the big screen
