The Revanent - Saw this on the big screen, cinematography was immense.definitely geared towards standing out visually than having a fully fleshed out story, which is why for me it dragged out a little bit towards the end.Whether Leo actually deserves to win the prize for this (he probably will) is debatable since its a really subdued performance more expression based than verbal.Tom Hardy was an absolute arsehole in this movie as well.
Victoria - German movie which is legitimately shot over the course of one night (without any digital trickery or obvious cuts) in one take.I liked this movie a lot, technically its immense, rather than feel gimmicky the way its been shot actually enhances what is essentially quite a simple premise (foreign girl meets a bunch of guys in a club and as the night goes on decisions are made and consequences are dealt) after the initial 30 mins or so of setup i was on the edge of my seat.
plus this film starts with a tune that has a dirty bassline. always a plus point in my book.
Grosse Pointe Blank - First time watching this (although for some reason i've seen the corridor fight with Benny Urquidez a bunch of times during the course of my life) John Cusack plays a pro hitman/assassin who decides to go to his high school reunion at the same time he has a job.Dan Ackroyd is great in his small role and Minnie Driver was a certified cutie back in the day.
cool film.
The Martian - Ridley Scotts best movie in years, that's mostly down to the script by Drew Goddard.I've read the book and the changes they made to that for the movie are actually rather well done, though i would say the book is still better in the end.
The Losers - revisited this, i'm sure if this movie came out now it would probably be a much bigger hit than when initially released.good chemistry between all the leads and Jason Patric is having a hoot as the bad guy.it's really worth watching for his performance alone.
The Lobster - Surreal dramedy starring Colin Farrell set in a world where its a crime (or unaccepted) to be alone.A hotel exists where visitors have 30 days to find a match otherwise they get turned into an animal of their choice.I don't think this movie works entirely although there's a lot i liked about it.
Black Mass - Not too familiar with the story of whitey bulger so i probably enjoyed this more than anybody accustomed to the story. How much of is pertinent though i'm not sure of.Depp was sinister as fuck in this.
Last Witch Hunter - I watched it, thought it was ok and then like an hour after watching it couldn't remember a single thing about it.
Sleeping with other people - Alison Brie & Jason Sudeikes star as a couple who lose their virginity together and then after reconciling in the future try their best to remain friends and not get involved with each other. If you want to see Alison Brie in some sexy lingerie then watch this movie.
No Escape - Watched this on a plane mostly to see if Lake Bell got out those fabulous titties at any point.Movie didn't do anything for me aside from that motivation, turned it off 3/4 of the way through.
Mississippi grind - Ryan Reynolds and Ben Mendelson are estranged souls who meet at a poker game and friendship ensues.this was a decent movie with a really good performance from Mendelson, i thought it would go more into the territory of actual poker playing but it veered off into the direction of gambling addiction.
Crimson Peak I'm a massive Del Toro fan so this was probably much more entertaining to me than most.another movie where visually it knocks you for six in places, loved the contrasting colors all throughout the movie in the set designs, costumes etc.Movie was grisly in a couple of places as well which i wasn't expecting ( the scene in the washrooms with the sink.)
pretty sure there's like 10 -15 other movies i've seen recently i'm not even remembering.
