Hideo Kojima Talks PS4: More Excited By New Kinds of Interaction than Hardware

"I think it’s this new type of interaction – this new ways of interacting with the game world – that’s more exciting to me."

Hideo Kojima gave his initial thoughts on Sony’s PlayStation 4 in an interview with IGN.

Although he didn’t watch Sony’s press conference, he was interested in the direction the PS4 is taking. And that enthusiasm stemmed less from the hardware specs and more from the increased functionality of the new console.

“I can say that with every new generation of hardware the capabilities of the hardware increases. But up to this point it’s always been very much of a vertical evolution – of course, you expect things like visual fidelity, audio, frame rate. New features such as 3D capability, etc, etc. These things are a given. They come with the new hardware.

“But what I’m really more interested in is other ways of expanding into the next generation – a more horizontal expansion, where you’re going to be doing things online, more of a social aspect. People will be able to interact with the game through various devices, through various media – such as tablets, smart phones, etc.”

And these kind of gameplay experiences could find there way into future Metal Gear titles. “I think it’s this new type of interaction – this new way of interacting with the game world – that’s more exciting to me. And I want to bring the Metal Gear franchise into that new wider world of interaction.”

Can we expect this kind of functionality in Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes? Kojima has previously said that the game's Peace Walker-like base management would be ideal for smartphones, and that some kind of integration is planned.

Cosign, pretty much every online program with social elements has an "Invisible" mode. So, should the PS4.

Ustream on Consoles: Not Exclusive to PS4

Ubiquity is the name of the game.

When the PlayStation 4 was revealed in New York City, one of the interesting features Sony showed off was PS4’s integrated Ustream capability. Ustream, according to the company’s founder and CEO Brad Hunstable, is “the largest live social broadcasting platform in the world,” and as such, the implications of Ustream on PS4 are considerable.

In short, what you do on PlayStation 4 can be seamlessly broadcast to the rest of the world.

In a conversation with IGN, Hunstable touted the strength of his platform (the company had a staggering 8 million viewers tune in simply to see an asteroid fly-by). Even the PlayStation 4 reveal was live on Ustream: over one million people at one time were watching it. “It had an average view time of one hour,” Hunstable said, “for essentially a two-hour-long Sony PlayStation commercial.”

The theme of our conversation with Hunstable focused on a single word: ubiquity. Hunstable wants Ustream everywhere, and he confirmed to IGN that, in terms of current and next-generation consoles, Ustream is in no way, shape or form exclusive to the PlayStation 4.

When asked if “UStream’s next-gen console capability [is being] relegated to PlayStation,” Hunstable answered, “no, it’s not.”

He elaborated: “There’s not something I can announced today, but we will… Again, I go back to our strategy, which is to be ubiquitous as well. I want to bring live broadcasting – that’s our mission – to broadcasters of all sizes, but also viewers, wherever they are. We are laser-focused on making sure that happens.”

When specifically pressed about Microsoft’s next Xbox and Nintendo’s Wii U, Hunstable’s answer was pretty much the same: “There’s nothing specific I can talk about today.”

Sony's 4K Movie Service Will Come to PS4

Movie downloads could be bigger than 100GB

While Sony has been pretty secretive about the look and feel of the PS4, one thing has been confirmed today by The Verge: the upcoming next-gen console will support Sony's other pet project, the "world's first" 4K movie download service. In an exclusive chat with Sony Electronics President and COO Phil Molyneux, details emerged about the ultra-high definition movie service that jive with the system's ability to support 4K photos and movies, but not games.

No further details, or even a release date, were nailed down, but it appears that the 4K service will be heavily impaired by ultra-slow downloads. Molyneux indicated that 4K videos could be more than 100 GB each, meaning that there will be plenty more overnight downloads ahead for Sony's fans. However, as technology improves, the folks at Sony are hedging their bets to create a fully comprehensive 4K entertainment system, with the company's 4K TVs at the center and the PS4 as an entry point to mainstream adoption.

What do you think of a 4K movie download service for the PS4? Are you willing to put up with the long wait times? Let us know in the comments below.

Ono: Announcing Street Fighter as early game on the PS4 would be restrictive, experience we gain from Deep Down will put us in a better position

When Capcom's Yoshinori Ono took the stage at the PlayStation 4 press conference a few weeks back many people thought a new Street Fighter title would be announced, but Ono quickly stomped down that assumption by saying he wasn't there to talk about the franchise he's best known for working on.

A little while later, Ono told MCV that the reason Capcom chose a new brand (Deep Down) instead of an established franchise like Street Fighter or Resident Evil was because of consumer expectations, saying that, "We wanted to be free to utilize the PS4's hardware capabilities and unique services without the constraints of working within an existing IP."

All isn't lost though, as Yoshinori noted that the development experience they gain from this title will put them in a better spot to bring their existing franchises to the new hardware, and do a better job taking advantage of the features and services they offer.

"Of course, the development experience we gain will put us in an even better position to bring our existing series to the console in a way that takes full advantage of its hardware and services."

How much time will pass before Capcom puts the latest iteration of Street Fighter out on a next generation console is up for debate, but it's good to know Ono is still very much aware of the fan demand and expectations surrounding the title.

Dishonored Developer Says That PlayStation 4 Is a Joy

Posted Sun, 10 Mar 2013 | 12:45 GMT by Sammy Barker

Delighted with the extra memory

One of the developers behind last year’s surprise hit Dishonored has described Sony’s next generation system as “a joy”. Chatting with Eurogamer.net directly after last week’s BAFTAs, lead level designer Christopher Carrier revealed that the PlayStation 4’s surprise inclusion of 8GB GDDR5 RAM was particularly pleasing.

“We need memory, you know?” he told the publication. “As a level designer we are struggling against memory every day. We cut things, we remove things, we strip things, we split the levels, [and] we remove NPCs from levels because there’s not enough memory.”

He continued: “Knowing that memory is something that is going to be improved in the next generation of consoles: to us, it’s a joy. It’s something that we were waiting for.”

Dishonored sloped away with the coveted Game of the Year award at last week’s BAFTAs. It also sold extremely well, meaning that a sequel on the PS4 is pretty much guaranteed at this point. Put your paws in the air if you’re excited.
