Following yesterday’s Future of PlayStation tease from Sony, new rumors suggest that the PlayStation 4 will be announced this month, released this year and may even let players share videos and screenshots directly.

Anonymous sources have told both Polygon and The Wall Street Journal that the event will indeed be the announcement of Sony’s next console and that Sony is aiming to release the system before the end of the year. The Wall Street Journal suggests that Sony “is planning to incorporate more social gaming aspects into the new machine” and “is more focused this time on the changes in how users interact with the machine.”

Edge Online, meanwhile, also reports that the next PlayStation will be out before the end of the year in the U.S. and Japan (but early 2014 in Europe) and says it will be more powerful than the next console from Microsoft. The system will allegedly feature a redesigned controller, which fits with rumors of Sony abandoning the DualShock that circulated earlier this month. According to Edge, the system “will ship with a redesigned controller which is the same size as an existing DualShock but features a small touchpad in place of the existing Select, Start and PS buttons. The tech is based on Vita’s rear touchpad, and is similarly responsive in use.”Edge also refers to specific elements of the controller mentioned in a leaked list of specs last week. Specifically, Edge says Sony’s new controller will feature a Share button that will “launch a new feature that will allow screenshots and video to be distributed online.” The system will reportedly “continually record the most recent 15 minutes of onscreen action, which users will then be able to edit and broadcast via the Internet.”

For now, the future of PlayStation is uncertain, but Sony told IGN yesterday "The PlayStation meeting will be about the future of the PlayStation business." Our PlayStation team will attend Sony’s event in New York City later this month, so keep checking back for confirmed news as it’s announced.

as excited as I am for this, i never buy the first version of anything high tech. It's always overpriced and there's usually something wrong with it that isn't discovered until several months later, you're essentially paying to test something out. But if "the last guardian" drops with the ps4- i'll take my chances.

Leaks suggest the console, tipped to be named either PlayStation 4 or Orbis and cost around £300, will feature EIGHT computer chips in its electronic “brain”.

That will make it more powerful than a top-end PC and dwarf the capacity of its 70 million-selling PlayStation 3 predecessor.

Its ultra-HD quality graphics will be four times as detailed as the PS3’s standard HD. There will also be 3D capability — with further rumours suggesting a new controller, possibly with a built-in touchscreen display.

The console will include the option to play older games and PS3 controllers will still work. It will also have a next generation ultra-HD player — the successor to Blu-ray — and let families view catch-up TV such as iPlayer and access films and music.

There is no official indication of what the new machine will look like and it is unlikely to hit stores until after summer.

It will then go head-to-head with a new Xbox console from Microsoft, which is likely to be launched in June. Sony yesterday invited journalists to a New York meeting on February 20 where they said they will “talk about the future PlayStation business”.

Bosses refused to confirm whether that meant a new console, but internet rumours suggested it did. Sony has previously used such meetings to show off prototypes or detail specifications.

That is correct.

Ultra HD would mostly require "next gen" TV 's though

Too bad good marketing and Sony don't go hand in hand now... We sold those PS3/games... And the same will happen to the Vita once the price cut comes.

All Sony need to do cater to the gamers and make it look like what they're doing is going to advance gaming to PS9 eventually. We'll do all the marketing.

This will help

Sony is rumored to he this with the PS4
