Cause he don't own his publishing/masters (I always get the terminology mixed up)! Blame that on his prolific drug usage, because he seemed to be otherwise smart business-wise.

Actually I wonder if a lot of those older artists on those lists own their music.

Record company pimpin' was in full effect back in the days.

Also, if I'm not mistaken, in the early days of rap (ie late 80s or so) cats didn't have to pay for using samples. Think it took some lawsuits for that whole structure to get put in place.

Hutch was most definitely a beast. One of my faves.

Another cat that's one of my faves is tom brock, who was down with Barry White (also a top notch musician). Far as I know he only had one album, but the joints was so epic.

Mos def basically used this whole song (not just sample) and just changed the lyrics

And Jay-Z's Say Hello sampled his There's Nothing in this world
