Complex are a bunch of shitheads...
First of all, you can't make a list of 10 songs from the last 5 years and say those are the most lyrical. That's an average of 2 songs per year. You really think that you can name 10 songs with any certainty and say that those are the 10 most lyrical songs in the last 5 fucking years? For every 10 songs put up there, i could give you another 20 and have plenty of people agree that my list is much better.
Lyricism is subjective (to some extent).
IMO, for a song to be "lyrical", it needs to be technically sound, and encompass something great about the aspects of a good technical emcee. Otherwise, it's just a list of songs where the rapper randomly strung together witty lines.
Does it follow a concept? Does it display punch-line ability? Does it display multisyllable patterns? Does it tell any sort of story? Does it elicit emotion out of the listener? Is the artist making a point of some kind? Does the delivery of the lyrics flow with the beat? Etc...
These are all things that I look for when I think about lyricism.
Anyway...just a few songs I think should at least be considered if we are silly enough to string together a wack list of "the most lyrical songs in the past 5 years"
