They have high yields, but the reason they have high yields is because they're high risk.

Meaning, they have to have high yields in order to attract buyers because the company isn't doing that well.

@sion could probably explain it better, but that's pretty much the gist of it.

Depends on the junk bonds of the particular company, I wouldn't recommend them to a person who isn't going to be doing that level of due diligence or doesn't understand them. There are phenomenal opportunities there tho if you look deep enough and do your homework. I personally don't mess with them but I would be open to them if the RIGHT opportunity arrived.

Could be a lot of reasons but I think it's because of the proposed merger Charter and TWC made sometime back. Right now in the media business there's the race for content. I suspect Comcast will continue to rise, as content will become increasingly more important because of the money people will pay to access certain content or services for their mobile devices. I think investors are bidding up Comcast as a bet on this idea of content becoming important.

Personally I like Liberty Media Corporation entirely because of John C. Malone, you not going to find a lot of CEOs like that. At 18x earnings, Comcast is way too expensive to me. He's incredible at allocating capital and his mind seems leagues ahead into the future. Liberty owns I think a portion of Comcast, I know they own a huge piece of Charter tho.

A good book with a pretty in-depth analysis on junk bonds (well bonds in general) is Security Analysis by Ben Graham. He touches on it a bit in The Intelligent Investor, saying that many extremely good opportunities can be found in distressed securities for the enterprising investor willing to search and understand them.
