It's kinda crazy I've been watching this shit since the beginning. I remember when rollerblading used to be big and poised to "conquer" skateboarding with Aaron Feinberg and Arlo Eisenberg. Oh, and Downhill X and shit. Hell, I even remember wanting that shitty-assed PSOne game.

Or when Tony Hawk smashed into Shaun White as a kid (think it was a young Shaun White anyway).

Or white dude plummeting off the super pipe thing. Yeah, can't wait for this shit.

No inline skating = no interest in the X-Games from me, and it was Bob Burnquist who destroyed Shaun White on the half pipe. That was epic.

I was well into it back in the day. Used to do a bit of it as well back when Limp Bizkit were still famous. In fact, I'm just finding out now that's not considered 'cool' any more. I don't get why it's not fashionable any more or why it's regarded as being so dead that the X-Games refuse to have it.

And since when did that ginger freak Shaun White become a skateboarder, or was he always one and I just didn't know, or care? The man is sick on the vert (I'm really not Mr Current Affairs when it comes to extreme sports).

Is Inline Skating on the Way Out at the X Games?
ESPN Will Reportedly Expunge Last Trace of Inline From This Summer's Event

In the early years of the X Games, inline skaters were all over the place.

In fact, there were more inline skate events in the early X Games than there were skateboard or bicycle events.

Inline hit its peak at X Games IV in 1998. At those "games," there were four inline events: vert, vert triples, street and downhill.

Downhill, one of the original X Game events, attracted many of the best U.S. inline speed skaters, who slalomed down steep hills in pursuit of cash prizes that dwarfed those offered by the World Inline Cup.

Among the downhill skaters were Julie Glass, who won the women's race in 1998, and future Olympic gold medalist Derek Parra, who finished second behind Dante Muse in 1996.

But after a few years, ESPN apparently started to tire of inline skating.

In 1999, it halved the number of inline events, leaving only vert and street (which are both aggressive stunt events).

And last year, 2004, it again halved the number, leaving only one inline event: vert.

And to further shrink the inline presence, it combined the men's and women's events into one. (Only one woman, Fabiola de Silva, competed; she finished sixth of 11.)

So What About 2005?

Since last summer, rumors have been flying that ESPN would expunge the last trace of inline from the X Games this year.

And apparently, those rumors are true.

"The crowds loved inline"

Bell is urging fellow skaters to sign a petition asking ESPN to reconsider its decision.

"I've competed in the X Games for the last two years," he says. "The stands were packed, and the crowd loved inline."

The X Games web site, EXPN.com, already seems to have expunged itself of inline.

The site provides lots of information, including photos and video, about its current lineup of extreme sports: skateboarding, moto X (stunt motorcycling), snow sports and bike stunts.

But no where is there a mention of inline, except in the pages that list results of prior X Games and also in information about the Asian and Latin American X Games. (Apparently, these smaller X Games will continue to include inline events.)

Big Macs

It's not entirely clear why ESPN has decided to drop inline from the X Games. The quick and dirty answer would be that it thinks audiences have seen one too many back flips.

But most likely, it comes down to ratings. Apparently, ESPN doesn't think that inline skating is selling enough Big Macs anymore.

Just weren't selling enough Big Macs lol But thats what I thought, it wasn't getting enough ratings. A homie of mines really liked Inline skate I hated that ish, glad its been purged from the X Games. They even got rid of BMX Flatland as well which caught me by surprise..

Loved street inlining and vert was/is just next level ridiculous. Fuck the X-Games then if that's the case, and I know American TV is ran purely on ratings but cutting certain womens events out is pure cuntish behaviour as well.

I think its been in X Games for the last 5 years. I also disagree with cutting women's events, their showing their bias, not surprising tho...
