How laughter can keep you on your spiritual path

Carmel Wroth | August 2009 issue

Known as the “hugging saint,” Amma might just as well be called the laughing saint. Photograph: Money Sharma/EPA/Corbis

A few years ago, I traveled throughout India looking for spiritual inspiration. Naturally, I wasn’t the first person to have done this. At all the temples, ashrams and holy mountains, I found crowds of Westerners looking for something as well, and presumably it wasn’t the bedbugs, diesel fumes and diarrhea. It was easy to identify the seekers in a crowd. While regular tourists wore shorts or khakis or brightly colored Indian shirts, spiritual tourists wore a lot of white. They walked across temple courtyards, a slow-motion blur of white drapes and scarves, their faces a vision of sobriety and introspection.

Inside the shrines, they sat perfectly still, unfazed by the heat, various itches and their gurgling tummies. They sat in full lotus or Zen kneeling positions. Their eyes were sublimely closed. Rarely did they smile, and when they did, it was more of a knowing smile.

Their manner perplexed me, especially when I walked out of a shrine into the chaos of color, sound and personality that is India. Everywhere I turned, Indians were smiling, shoving food in my hands, cracking jokes, playing with kids—theirs or a stranger’s. And when I met a real-life Indian guru, she seemed to be laughing most of the time. Amma is known as "the hugging saint" because she gives affectionate embraces to the thousands of devotees who line up to see her everywhere she goes.

A petite, plump woman with a perfectly round face, warm dark eyes and a beaming smile, Amma could also have been called the laughing saint. One of my clearest memories is of her squinting her eyes closed, leaning her head back and breaking into peals of laughter.

If the very gurus the seekers come to see are laughing, why are the seekers themselves so serious? I decided I wanted to learn something about laughter’s ability to unlock the spirit. After all, as James Baraz, a Buddhist meditation teacher at Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Northern California, told me, "It’s called enlightenment for a reason. Lighten up!" I went in search of some lighthearted tips on the spirit.

" We are not the victims of aging, sickness and death. These are part of the scenery, not the seer, who is immune to any form of change.

The billions of changes occurring in our cells are only the passing scenery of life; behind their mask is the seer, who represents the flow of the awareness. everything I can possibly experience begins and ends with awareness; every thought or emotion that captures my attention is a tiny fragment of awareness; all the goals and expectations I set for myself are organized in awareness. what the ancient sages termed the Self can be defined in modern psychological terms as the continuum of awareness, and the state known as unity consciousness is the state where awareness is complete- the person knows the whole continuum of himself without masks, illusions, gaps, and broken fragments."

nice drops, i will look at laughter different now, it seems im always in a serious mood and thats not healthy.

The beginning of every substance is thought. Before substance can be manifested, there must be thought. Thought is spirit, the unseen, but it does not remain unseen. The thoughts of a man are soon revealed in the substance of deeds which follow those thoughts."

"There is a difference between the mind's eye and the physical eye. Blind men vision, analyze and discern what is fed to them by the mind's eye, for there is a force behind the mind which enables it to function free of sight. The physical brain which controls the five senses has no control over the mind, just as the mind has no control over the Spirit. The Impregnable Spirit control the mind and the brain which controls the body. We became subject to and controlled by the desires and perceptions of physical sense. We began to judge after our eyes and ears. Yah judges not after the sight of the eyes, nor the testimony of the wicked, but He (in us) judges after the heart, something one cannot see except through the mind's eye which is the Impregnable Spirit of the Living Yah.

Things that are seen are not as things which do appear.

There is another world apart from the one which we see with our eyes and it surrounds us and partakes of our very lives and is as real as the sounds of the birds and the color of the sky. "

Discipline makes things easier, organize your life

Discipline makes things easier, organize your life

Uh um, uh um, its gonna be alright

Uh um, uh um, its gonna be fine

Uh um, uh um, its gonna be alright

Uh um, uh um, its gonna be fine

Discipline, discipline (practice makes pefect)

Discipline, discipline (Health is wealth)

Discipline, discipline (All things in moderation, plan your work work your plan)

No fish though, no candy bars, no cigarettes

Only ganja and fresh-squeezed juice from oranges

Exercising daily to stay healthy

And I rarely drink water out the tap, 'cause it's filthy

Lentil soup is mental fruit

And ginger root is good for the youth

Fresh veg-e-table with the ital stew

Sweet yam fries with the green calalloo

Careful how you season and prepare your foods

'Cause you don't wanna lose vitamins and miner-ules

And that's the jewel

Life brings life, it's valuable, so I eat what comes

From the ground, it's natural

Let your food be your medicine no exceedin'

Strictly herb, generate in the sun, 'cause I got Melanin

And drink water, eight glasses a day

'Cause that's what they say

They say you are what you eat, so I strive to be healthy

My goal in life is not to be rich or wealthy

'Cause true wealth comes from good health and wise ways

We got to start takin' better care of ourselves

Powerful post!

# Hormones: Laughter reduces the level of stress hormones like cortisol, epinephrine (adrenaline), dopamine and growth hormone. It also increases the level of health-enhancing hormones like endorphins, and neurotransmitters. Laughter increases the number of antibody-producing cells and enhances the effectiveness of T cells. All this means a stronger immune system, as well as fewer physical effects of stress.

# Physical Release: Have you ever felt like you "have to laugh or I'll cry"? Have you experienced the cleansed feeling after a good laugh? Laughter provides a physical and emotional release.

# Internal Workout: A good belly laugh exercises the diaphragm, contracts the abs and even works out the shoulders, leaving muscles more relaxed afterward. It even provides a good workout for the heart.

# Distraction: Laughter brings the focus away from anger, guilt, stress and negative emotions in a more beneficial way than other mere distractions.

# Perspective: Studies show that our response to stressful events can be altered by whether we view something as a 'threat' or a 'challenge'. Humor can give us a more lighthearted perspective and help us view events as 'challenges', thereby making them less threatening and more positive.

# Social Benefits of Laughter: Laughter connects us with others. Also, laughter is contagious, so if you bring more laughter into your life, you can most likely help others around you to laugh more, and realize these benefits as well. By elevating the mood of those around you, you can reduce their stress levels, and perhaps improve the quality of social interaction you experience with them, reducing your stress level even more!

For the purposes of producing natural DMT in the body by way of trytophans I would suggest leaning more towards the dates as the sweetener. Medjool date is good; the darker the better. Peanuts and sesame seeds are good sources of trytophan too so you can use some good natural (non-hydrogenated) peanut butter and tehina (sesame seed butter) in place of the spirulina for now. You could also replace the goji berries with the recommended serving size of Twin Labs Vege Fuel soy protein powder. Its non-GMO, vegan and contains a verrry potent blend of amino acids which boost the bio-availability of the trytophan before the liver converts it into niacin. Mos stores carry this in their supplement sections. It comes in a gray, 18 oz container. Good stuff and its not hard to find.

The GNC spirulina should be fine. You just have to make sure you keep the container properly sealed.

I would use both the Goji berries AND the powder as the combination makes a very potent amino acid cocktail.

LOL. Yeah. What i've found with the issue of herbage and the spiritual realm is that it is the quickest way to get in a trance state so make sure your space is etherically clean otherwise it makes for easier attachment of multi-dimensional nasties. Bad trips, hallucinations etc are usually a by-product of that or just overall forcing your astral body to do things its not ready for and suffering sixth sensory overload. You should be allright, although if you must indulge in the shrubbery I highly recommenced tinctures or vaporization.

LOL..naw I dont mean it like that with "if you must indulge". Its just not good to smoke anything which is why I said the vape or tincture thing. I've not really had a bad trip per se but I've had experiences where I kind of see "into" people (if Im explaining it right) when high and i didnt like what I saw. Im extremely sensitive to peoples energy so whenever I have indulged in recent times i kind of stay away from public functions and/or people with bogus spirits. Ive learned that when dealing with such things, its easier to maintain when you just stay conscious of your breath that it doesnt get shallow from distress. If you feel panicky- rapid breath of fire helps give you extra confidence if you find yourself on strange turf in the vulnerable state that accompanies being in a trance state. Nadi sodhana (alternate nostril breathing) is good in such situations as well if you are trting to induce calm. It also helps spark up your creativity. It just depends on you and what knots you have untied chakra-wise. You kinda gotta play around with what works for you when not high and then remember to employ the appropriate breathing tools for the desired effect.

Burning a quality sandalwood, frank and myrhh will energize you helps keep your etheric space clean. This helps safeguard againt "bad trips". but dont get that scheap shit. You know if its real if the smoke burns white. That other stuff will have greyish smoke and burn real fast. Thats a sign of shitty incense. I prefer the rock incense that the rastas use. I dont know if you have a shop near you that sells those but basically they sell these metal containers that you put a special charcoal in and the you let the rocks of frank and myrhh resin burn on them. Its good stuff. Heres alink to an example of the insence burners Im referring to

Yeah man...its some awful energy out there to deal with sometimes. i try to stay away from "nigga activities" i.e. clubs and whatnot as I can feel death lurking in the air. Like physically for real.

Whenever you can get your hands on some of that incense, just notice the difference.

No prob on the dispensation of info. I thank you for making the thread in the first place.
