they instilled a love of reading in us real early, made reading a form of entertainment, encouraging our imaginations instead of making reading a chore. they also promoted our creativity by telling us stories and us telling stories. like every night one of us would just make up a story and tell it, then the next night, another one of us would continue it. it was a lot of fun
so we actually learned to love reading, like we'd beg my mom to drop us off at the mall so we could spend hours at the book store
they used every opportunity as a teaching lesson. like if i was at the store with them, they make me figure how much change they were due, or if we asked a random question they real explain things in a way we understood
oh and their motto as far as school was concerned was "if you are not ahead you are behind," meaning if you are assigned to read a chapter, read 2 chapters ahead, always study and prepare yourself ahead of time
most importantly i think they instilled a sense of capability in me. they made me feel like i could be as smart as i wanted, and to be proud of being intelligent, to always strive to understand the world, and to have genuine and voracious appetite to learn
i could post so much more, i think this is long enough for one post

i don't think so, but it's really not hard to succeed with a lot of support. unfortunately, many african americans don't have the level of familial and community support like africans do.
for example, i am from a particular tribe in my country, and i swear i can go to any city, without a place to stay, and if one person from my tribe is there, i will have a place to stay. oh and the tribes have groups and sub groups. so your community is easily thousands of people deep
this is why i've really made an effort to reach out to a lot of my step-sons friends that don't perhaps have both parents present and involved. all his friends know our house is always somewhere they can come for help, whether it's because they just want some dinner or cuz they need help in school. my husband is like a surrogate father to all his sons friends that don't have a father around, he'll take them all to the Y and stuff, just teach them about manhood
ya know it's easy to say oh the black community is lost as an african, but you can easily make a positive change if you wanted. i think the first step is that we need to realize that we are all black, and we can succeed together. i think having more families like mine who are combinations of african and african american will do a lot to help. and i see way more africans get out of the only dating other africans shtick, so there's hope
