i grew up on NY hiphop and i still rep it .there a lot of dope shit still comes from the north.lately a lot of dope shit comes from artists like troy ave and BSB, maino and the mafia,ASAP mob and the tan boys to name some.and it's lyrical, hardcore dope boy swag shit. but the south makes the most appealing music for everybody to ride to and dance .shit that comes from ATL by artists like gucci, waka, future and scooter for example is simple yes but catchy as fuck and bags when riding to it or when you chilling with your bitch or entering a flashy club swagged up and shit. consumers want that shit. fans are following trends buying specific liquor wearing designer shit.

Gangster rap = started 1984 in Compton by at the time underground artist and mix tape makers name Toddy Tee & Mix Master Spade before they had commercial success with "The Batter Ram" & "Just Say No" in 1985.

Those songs including others had original street non radio versions along with songs like "the rockhead got you busted" and a few other songs that were half an hour long on each side of a 60 minute cassette.

Schooly D gets that title father of gangster rap because he had the nationwide distribution and radio plugs (in 85 with PSK) that Toddy Tee & Spade didn't get until late 85 and 86.

And only radio plug they had was one station KDAY to get their music out to mainstream, well... local mainstream basically. East Coast never played West Coast records back then even though the West Coast radio gave more shine to more East Coast artist (mainstream commercial and obscure artist) back then when at the time the East Coast radio hated on their own artist.

Eazy E came out with Boys In the Hood in late 86

K.B. Da Kidnappa,Lil Flea,Icey Hott & Pharoah=Street Military!
