Not impressed. But not sure what the big deal is in the grand musical scheme of things. I've heard women cover Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, Donny Hathaway and other male artists who have passed on. This is just a more modern version. Maybe he just thought "I like the song, I'm do my version and see how people take it..." He was probably a fan of Aaliyah just like lots of other people.
