Got nothing to do with crack babies or lack of intelligence. In fact, im almost positive that this generation is actually smarter than every generation that has preceded them.

You wanna know why The Golden Age was the Golden Age? Because they had different influences and experiences behind their subject matter/lyrics. Jay, Nas, The Wu, Snoop, Pac, etc. were the children of people who experienced the civil rights movement and even participated in it. These were guys who were kids when what we know as inner city hoods were starting to surface ('70's) and when Reaganomics, outsourcing, and crack, destroyed what rising trends in violence and drug use didn't. These were guys who grew up knowing who Jim Brown, Gil Scott- Heron, and Eldridge Cleaver were. Basically these guys grew up with all that anger, alienation, and melancholy that was a result of being a young Black man in America during the '70's, '80's, and '90's.

My generation grew up a lot different. As smart as we are, we don't do as much critical thinking imo (why would we? With the internet and the Clinton administration being so media friendly, there wasn't much motivation to). We've had electronics and media to rely on . And we've grown up with materialism/consumerism being such a dominant force in our lives. And this isn't dissing us. It's not our fault that this is the way the world was when we were born and raised.

I disagree with the title of this post. People do like lyrics. But if no one is putting out music with lyrics then the listeners are going to listen to whats out (on the radio, BET, MTV)...
I don't blame the fans for supporting bubble gum music. I blame the artist for putting it out. In the end it makes it harder for artist that are making music with lyrics to get heard. Most listeners are followers anyway, so if 9 out of 10 rappers are bubble gum then that's what the radio will play...it's what people will want to hear.

If we had more artist making music like Nas, KRS One, Andre3000 for example, and the listeners heard more of it... then maybe they would realize what they are missing. The whole essence of hip hop is gone. + The artist don't teach it anymore. They don't do it for the love like it use to be done...it's about publicity, money, and the lime light.

I'm a hip hop head that doesn't listen to the radio or watch BET for the simple fact I know where to go to find the music I like to hear...but everyone doesn't know how to find the good music...so they go with what they know and hear everyday. And the person that made this post that said no one likes real lyrics anymore ...if he/she was to not have no other choice but to listen to lyrical artist, I bet he would like it. Like I said, it's just all what people are accustomed to. It takes a strong mind to not give in to a trend. And that's what the new generation is doing. Hip Hop didn't start this way. It started with knowledge and skill and you had to earn respect.

your paradigm is too accelerated. If people lived longer, the difference from 20 to 30 wouldn't add as much "growth" as you think it would.
