Are only the people who wanted to end up in combat in combat? Like is it possible to join the military just for all the va benefits when you get out and then somehow find yourself in the desert somewhere in the world getting shot at?

at the bolded... yep shit happened to me.. wasnt getting shot at, but definitely didnt have a choice in the manner

I was AF deployed with a small unit at a Army base in Iraq... the AF cops didnt have enough people so we got volunTOLD by my E-7 to help.. now my job in the air force was air transportation.. nigga i loaded planes.. now i got a M16 and told i was a cop now, no training or anything....smh.. talk about a nigga being pissed!

i got LUCKY though.. only ended up doing escort duty... basically you have a bunch of Iraqi civilians that work on the base.. but they cant roam a military installation all willy nilly.. they need to be escorted .. so yeah i got stuck doing that shit.. luckily it was just for a few weeks.

shit still sucked..it was a team of 3 of us (we would have anywhere from 5-8 iraqis) and we had to go every morning to the front of the base (which was miles and miles away from were we actually stayed at on base) grab our iraqis and bring em alll the waaay back to where they worked.. oh what did my iraqis work on?? a fucking fence. its august in Iraq rocking a vest, helmet, and full gear.. watching Iraqis work on a fence for 12 hours a day... shit fucking sucked ...but guess i cant really complain as we all know cats who had worse shit happen to them in Iraq/Afghanistan

To emphasize what @JusDre313 said I'd despite what the media tells you the war on terror is still on. My unit actually might be deploying to Afghan next year. Understand regardless of what branch you are you could find yourself deployed down range. It's a risk that you have to decide if it's worth taking for the benefits. In my opinion it is.

Yeaaaaa im just tryna get 10% off at the IHOP i don't know about that whole "fighting a war" thing

I'm national guard now thought in the process of switching to the active side. PT score high enough and fuck it is want to attempt Ranger school, I'm about to be going to air assault school.

@StoneColdMikey if after military you are trying to go in criminal justice field I would try to get in Ranger (special ops) or just go straight green beret (special forces) you get the pick of the best IF you make it. From homeland security to FBI, cia, ATF etc etc.

Shoild I just join the navy?

I'm around the same age as you but have had a few hiccups along the way, so when this bachelor's degree is finally completed I'll try to become a commissioned officer in the Army, 11a(infantry officer).

When you go in as a officer your pay is a bit better than if you enlisted. There are plenty of careers in the Air Force and Navy, including STEM based careers, that should translate into making a good living back in civilian life when you get out. Plus the benefits.

I ask everyone who think about joining combat arms the same thing so don't take offense. Are you sure you up to that homie? Yeah officer life is generally easier but you are going to be expected to exceed every standard in one of the most strictest fields. If so I hope you are preparing now because I got a lot of shit offices who came fresh out of college not know how to do shit.

Even if your in the AF reserves or National/coast guard Reserves?

Being deployed doesn't equate to actually being in combat though?

Correct. Just because you're deployed doesn't mean you'll be in a combat scenario. If you're security forces though, the likelihood of you being in a hazardous pay zone is increased. Yeah, that extra pay is nice, but you need to be super aware of your surroundings at all time.

I hope I'm up for it, so we'll see when I try out. My long term lofty goal is making the 75th ranger regiment---getting the tab and the scroll---so I'll try to complete one duty station as an infantry officer first.

Same here man. One of the things I always wanted to do since i was a shorty was work federally so I know this will help so I'm up for the challenge .

Reserves and national guard deploy more the regular army.

But if y'all think you can go for it as far as Ranger and special forces go then try. Alot of people don't know but are mad up of older men being in there 25 to 30 range. They like to have men who have a personal stake ( a family) that can continue to drive them forward. I'm not going to say you can do it but right now I'm hitting 285 to 290 on pt test and been given the offer to attempt it. If you get that offer take it. And that goes for any schooling in the army wither it's airborne, air assault, mountaineer, expert Infantry, etc etc the shit transfers to the civilian side.

Joined Maryland ANG at 32. Started to go in 97 at 18 but got a job at the post office and my dumbass thought $22 an hour back then was ballin so I never finished the DEP process. I will tell you Basic Training was a lil tougher especially the fucking running, but the getting up early and yelling at you and shit was cake I had been in the real adult working world for 14 years. In the Reserves and Guard you can pick your specific job as long as your scores meet that afcs requirement but active duty no promises you pick jobs out of a group. My partner that was going in with me back in 97 with me is now getting ready to retire as an E-9 First Shirt, and my ass got at least 14 to go. Drill weekends in Baltimore consists of lobster and steak at chow hall and watching Ravens on flat screens. Free College in Maryland, gi kicker $350 a month plus drill pay so around extra $1000 a month for 2 days work.

At 32 really? What is the age limit fam just curious

Nah. Usually the guard and reserve people are the first ones to get deplyoyed. I mean, it's kinda like the military is getting at least something outta you, considering all of the benefits you receive compared to the relatively small amount of time you actually spend in uniform.

The theory is that you gotta bite the bullet somewhere. Of course there are exceptions to the rule, however.

To get the best jobs you must have an ASVAB score of at least 110. Anything below that score will limit your options and lowers your chances for any decent sign-on bonuses. You can retake the tests as much as you like.

The highest you can make is 99. FOH you dont know WTF you talking bout breh

Yes I figured thatll look great for me because I want to work for a fed agency like homeland , secret service / FBI efc

You can still be a fed w/o doing MP work. All the federal agencies are actively looking for agents with tech backgrounds...
