1. it was the comparison of Jay's voice in the Hot 97 interview compared to previous interviews. He definitely wasn't didn't have the cocky bravado he normally displays in his demenaour.
2. at some point through his as you put it "stumbling"....Angie says something along the lines of "let's take a minute". As if to say let's take a breather Jay, gather your composure like he was about to burst into tears. Plus I think she cackled a bit, implying wow I know this dude ain't going real hoemotional on me right now.
3. People over-exaggerate the whole thing just for emphasis
