I can't believe nobody's mentioned Luke.

Scarface is 10x better than both of them

The word "better" is a matter of opinion. Is Scarface a better rapper than Luke? Probably.

But according to the following links 2 Live Crew was on their 5th gold/platinum record when Scarface was releasing his first.

Not saying that sales are the be all, end all but Luke/2 Live Crew definitely has seniority over Scarface/Geto Boys.

And 2 Live Crew essentially invented bass music.

Scarface still in the game

2 Live Crew been out the game since 1998

Luke last dropped a project in 2006

What are you talking about?

The OP didn't specify anything about being a better lyricist. He simply asked who was the King Of The South and my response pointed out the two most respected and feared artists from the south.............

Scarface and Master P

Scarface and Master P

To be King Of New York you need to be the best rapper

To be king of the West you need to be the best rapper

Master P gets respect as a businessman but he is weak as fuck on the mic

You're making your own rules for your answers in this thread.

It is NOT what the actual thread starter asked.

Luke invented the game.

Luke carried Hip Hop on its back when the PMRC was trying to ban Hip Hop. Think over that. The PMRC was trying to ban stores from selling Rap music. The Florida police were arresting nightclub owners for letting the 2 Live Crew perform.

In June 1989, U.S. district court Judge Jose Gonzalez ruled the album As Nasty As They Wanna Be obscene and illegal to sell. The case was reversed and went all the way to The Supreme Court, who refused to hear the appeal, so Luke and the 2 Live Crew won.

Who cares what Luke has done in the past 10 years? If what you posted is correct, he was active in Hip Hop for 20 years. His legacy is set in stone.

Im the one making up rules by saying you need to be a good rapper to be claimed "King of _____" in the rap game?

But you are over here listing Master P because hes "most feared"

Luke didn't invent shit in the south.

The 2 Live Crew's breakout album 'As Nasty as They Wanna Be' came out the same time as the Geto Boys' breakout album 'Grip It On That Other Level' came out. They both came out the beginning of 1989.

I grew up in Massachusetts and I remember Throw The D, Ghetto Bass and We Want Some Pussy from 1986 and 1987.

As Nasty As They Wanna Be was when they blew up on MTV and started getting publicity for being obscene, but the real heads already knew all about them.

And they had 2 albums before As Nasty As They Wanna Be.

I first remember hearing of the Geto Boys from their self titled album that came out in 1990 (after NWA). But they didn't get any play until My Mind's Playin Tricks On Me, which came out in the summer of 1991.

Try Again.

My original/current answer to the thread starter's question was/is either Scarface or Master P. He asked who the king of the south was.

In order to be the 'King', you have to be both respected and feared, in which both of those guys were/are. At this point, you're arguing for the sake of arguing. There is nothing wrong with you simply admitting that you're wrong.

If that was your first introduction to the Geto Boys, I will no longer entertain this conversation with you.

Real niggas knew who they were before then, when they were dropping the following shit when I was a shorty.........

Yeah that might have been hot wherever you're from, but I live in the Northeast. We got a lil taste of Too $hort, Ice T, 2 Live Crew and NWA. But not so much Geto Boys.

From my perspective, growing up in Massachusetts, I was exposed to Gangsta rap first through Ice T and then Eazy E and NWA. I thought NWA was before The Geto Boys until somebody checked me. In fact, I used to frequent the oldschoolhiphop.com message board before it became a ghost town. DJ ReadyRed used to post there.

My point is growing up in Massachusetts I heard of The 2 Live Crew before I heard of the Geto Boys.

Maybe its because 2 Live Crew made clean versions of their songs so the college radio stations could play them.

Anyway, Luke was before Scarface.
