I will give Gucci the fact that he does know his audience and caters to them. But I think that will eventually be his downfall. Artists that play it safe and don't experiment musically are not gonna grow with their audience. Do you think a group like Outkast would've had as much success as they have if they had never taken any chances musically? No. Nobody wants to hear the same shit over and over. The core of Gucci's audience is 14-16 year olds. In a few years, those kids are not gonna relate as much to songs like "Lemonade" or "Kush Is My Cologne". A big part of Gucci's success is his production, mostly handled by Zaytoven. His lyrics are generic and meaningless and comparing him to people like NWA and Eazy E is ridiculous. Love or hate NWA, what they did was innovative and original. Trust me, most of the kids listening to Gucci now are gonna listen to him a few years from now and be like, what the fuck was I thinkin? And the t/s said something about Gucci's immaculate hustle and impressive catalog - I disagree. I can respect his hustle and work ethic but definately not his catalog. When he's not in jail, he comes out with at least one mixtape a week, that contains maybe 2-3 decent songs out of about 25, if you're lucky. His albums are a little bit better, but still not the type of disc you can just throw in and let it ride. I think another big part of his success is the fact that a lot of big Southern rappers aren't doing shit right now, like Outkast, Young Jeezy, T.I., Boosie, Lil Wayne, and even Lil Jon. It really wouldn't take much effort to take his current spot.
