So much for being a boss, how you own a label and signed to another?

i will check his next album for the production value though

His last album bricked so I understand the change. Not a good sign tho if MMG is signed to a completely different label than the boss, why didn't he just sign to Atlantic or move the whole label to Epic ? Tells me that Ross might not even fully own MMG as a record label.

Mark my words tho Wale is going to change labels.... Meek is going under for a while, Ross isn't selling like he used to, Wale is coming up, getting more exposure, there's no reason for him to still be signed to them. He's the biggest artist on that squad and he can get more money, more creative control and better handling of his projects elsewhere.

MMG was a good incubator for him when he was still trying to find his lane, not anymore.

Is Wale a bigger artist?IDK Wale has went gold and Meek hasn't ,but Meek seems to be more popular.By the numbers at the current moment,Meek sold more on their last albums respectively.

Wale did perform for the president, but he's also from the DMV.

IDK it's a fair argument.Ross still has sold more than Wale overall. He almost touched platinum on his debut and Teflon Don

Ross' last album did under 200K while Wale did slightly less on his last album.

Wale never made sense on MMG to me,but he worked it for what it was worth.

Hate to ruin this, but that's the way this works. Music labels have to sign to music distributor labels. Epic is a MAJOR distributor, without that, no budgets can be opened for major albums. This is a good deal.

Not the first time that the artist is signed to a different label than his clique. Epic probably liked his brand name more than the label plus The Warner Bros. deal for MMG might still be good enough for now until it runs out. No need to move that if it's not needed. Wale leaving though, I agree with. MMG needs new blood and Ross needs to change it up to keep pushing in the right direction.

The pressure is on at Epic.

I know it's easier said than done, but I think Ricky should go the Indie route. He's already a well accomplish artist that isn't financially struggle like most new rappers. This man has longevity in the game and a consistent fan base. I honestly believe that this was a bad business deal; no shade!

Is mmg a boutique label or do they a distro deal?

But it would seem like it would make more sense if mmg does have a distribution deal for him to put up his own money to get a larger return on his record sales. Because hes not really moving numbers unless he is just signing to another label to put out new music to keep touring.

They're (MMG) distributed under Warner Bros. And that's exactly what he's doing. You don't put up your own money, in the music business or really any business. Other people's money is the smart thing to do. But it takes a lot to put major records out and he can't put up that type of money. Big labels provide marketing, touring, studio/recording expenses (sample clearances, studio time, beats, etc.), you get advances to live off of, etc.

There was a big deal made about Irv Gotti, Suge Knight and J.Prince starting a distribution company for the reason that rap artists wouldn't have to sign to these labels. There's only 3 REAL companies:
In the 2000s, a majority of the music market is controlled by three major corporate labels: the French-owned Universal Music Group, the Japanese-owned Sony Music Entertainment, and the US-owned Warner Music Group. Labels outside of these three major labels are referred to as independent labels.

So for 3 black dudes to start one would cause an issue. In the industry, to be BIG, you HAVE to sign to these companies. Universal falls under Vivendi which controls a shitload of entertainment in the US including NBC so you can see how artists end up on these talk shows and shit. Warner is big in movies, Sony, etc.

Cosign except for a few nitpicks.

1. I thought WMG was currently Russian owned

2. Vivendi hasnt had ties to NBC for few years now, that was General Electric that owned hem for the longest. It's now controlled wholly by Comcast.

Carry on

His sales are going to drop like 50s soon. Better hope the rest of his crew carry him. 2bh all he can drop now and sell well is thug club music.

Sales only matter when talkin about 50 Cent and to discredit Rick Ross . Same niggas was praising Pusha T's 60K in another thread

Real talk. I don't care if a artist I like sells 1 album or goes diamond as long as it's jammin'. It's like some of these niggas be judging the quality of music strictly based off sales alone.

I just did searches on the labels, I have no idea who owns WMG. And the Vivendi thing, I forgot about that part. Good looking out.
