It's a classic cuz Jay Z said it was. I remember back in 96 nobody was listening to Reasonable Doubt. NOBODY. My cousin had the Dead Presidents tape and I thought that shit was ill but I didn't hear the album till much later. Vol 1 represents his style the best imo

So if no one listened to illmatic, it wouldnt be a classic?

i thought classic albums were for content, not hype....

I'm saying nobody mentioned Reasonable Doubt in the top 10 album discussion till Jay Z said it was his magnum opus after like The Blueprint came out. After he said it was his best album, niggas started cosigning blindly. Vol.1, Blueprint, Black Album > Reasonable Doubt.

VOl 1 is ok, the only song of it that can mess with any song of rd is You must love me, blueprint is mostly production and the black album was the closest he came to topping rd imo

i get what your saying...but content wise that shit is a classic and doesnt need "blind cosigners"

Content wise, Raekwon did it better with OB4CL and Nas did it cleaner with more style with IWW. Reasonable Doubt is like a bastard child of that mafioso rap with the street glamor appeal. It's good but it can't compare to the originals.

SMH OB4CL glammorized the mafioso lifestyle (it was Scarface) and same for for IWW, Reasonable Doubt was more like Carlitos Way in the fact the album was more interpersonal and you can see the person making the transition from one lifestyle to another. I don't know what the fuck you niggas are listening to.

did you hear the fucking intro to OB4CL? Cariltos way is the retarded offshoot sequel to Scarface. Jay Z still comes off as a biter and trend hopper

Another thing, there are alot of great artist who's initial work don't get the recognition from initial release (Van Gogh). The fact that most people back tracked to that album says alot about it, because most of these fronting ass niggas screaming we want the old Jay-z never even checked initially for him.

No Only Built For Cuban Links is Goodfellas with It Was Written being Casino. Reasonable Doubt is like that Empire movie with John Leguizamo. It was a good effort but nah bruh.

Word. OBFCL was more of the grimey glorification of the shit. RD went more in depth with it, and in a more impressive fashion lyrically, It's not even a "mafioso" album really. And I don't even know why IWW is being brought up.

OB4CL is the grimy version hence the Goodfellas comparison. It Was Written was more glitz and glamor so I'd call it the Casino type. I guess Carlito's Way for Reasonable Doubt is a good comparison but I just don't think it was all that good. Not to be compared to a classic like Carlito's Way.
