5th Letter- What made you gravitate towards J Dilla?
rip.dilla- One day in Nigeria mid 2005 my younger brother who's a musician himself brought home a bootlegged copy of Fantastic Vol. 2.... and that was it. The sound from that album was like nothing I'd ever heard before and we literally bumped that album every day. It was released independently in 1998. It was a gem of a record and it actually flew under the radar in the HipHop world at the time of it's release. They were big name acts on there too..
February of the following year would come the news that he'd passed. I woke up one early morning and heard the news on my local FM station. I mourned that the world had lost a genius... his legacy started becoming apparent after he died
I've copped or acquired every single beat tape or album he's produced one way or another. I attend the annual Dilla Day celebrations here in London... the profits go towards cure for Lupus: the disease that killed him. Apart from HipHop and RnB my other favourite genre would be jazz. I've got a pretty solid collection. Reggae too... black music in general.
5th Letter- What are some of your favorite Dilla beats/songs?
rip.dilla- Too many to mention: 'Stakes Is High' gets me hype 'cos it's a jazzy production, 'E=mc[squared]' another favourite.. 'Players'... . Some of his work with ATCQ, My head is a kinda database of his beats. Too many dope selections to mention
5th Letter- How did you discover the IC?
rip.dilla- I was on the AHH website for HipHop related news like in the better half of 2009 and Illseed's rumor section... however I wanted to disperse my views somewhere as a HipHop head. And the Community section caught my eye and the rest is history..
5th Letter- What were your first memories of the IC?
rip.dilla- First memories... I started off in The Reason before I branched out to other subforums. I remember visiting The Essence quite frequently and trying to give it some kinda life but my efforts and those of others especially @RuffDraft were futile. I can't really remember much over the past 7 years or thereabouts but I do recall that dude H-Rap was a regular and quite a popular poster and apart from his high grade trolling he was a thorough HipHop head.. he always dropped lists of albums gonna be released in a calendar year plus his threads were dope too and did numbers. A whole lotta posters are gone or either had name changes or shit... I joined the IC before the advent of reactions so.. yeah I'm a bit of a vet. LOL
5th Letter- Any specific threads that you consider memorable?
rip.dilla- The Shenco thread was one: I dunno what that nigga did on a song he produced but the roasting was unprecedented. Went on and on and on till you got accounts being created outta nowhere just to roast. I mean it wasn't the worst song ever made or anything. That's the beauty of the IC anyway.. There was the 'Control' thread: Big Sean's song that had a very controversial verse from Kendrick Lamar. I followed that real time : it caused an uproar and what I loved about it was the fact that you also had OGS and the older generation of HipHop heads chiming in the discussion...
And of course the SleepwalkingInJapan fiasco. I think the funniest thread I personally I've encountered. That nigga Nolte is just a clown straight up. We had Goobs and Axel. I liked Goobs Diss song even downloaded it... A couple of the Breakfast Club interview threads were entertaining. Shout out to the #creepset movement too... that thread is a joy to behold with me being an African B). Classic shit. Too many over the years to list.
5th Letter- Who are some of your favorite and least favorite posters?
rip.dilla- Well.. Favourite? One of whom is @buttuh_b.. he's a soulful brother. @king hassan too; OG helped a nigga with his crate digging. @achewon87 is a soulquarian like myself..@BrideofKilla, @obnoxiouslyfresh, @ms.jones, @Sion, @atribecalledgabi, @BOSSExcellence, @Blackcat ... these ones off the top but they're more. Shout out to all my fellow African ICers too... we growing steadily. Especially everyone on the 'What Are You Listening To Now' thread. We like a family over there: all my brothers and the 'Recently Watched with Spoilers' thread in LCA... all the film buffs there too. All fam
Least favourite? Let's just say I ignore a whole lot of 'em, don't quote 'em or follow their posting... if you've noticed I'm not one of them posters that goes back and forth with another poster trading insults and shit which is a daily trend on the IC and somewhat entertaining and funny in most cases... I'm all for positivity.
5th Letter- What are some things you'd like to see changed/any suggestions about the IC?
rip.dilla- A 'SMH' reaction button is required I think. A whole lot of outlandish shit gets posted on here.. .and that reaction befits it. Apart from that.. I think I'm cool with the set-up... I don't own any social media accounts so this is my only outlet on the Internet I interact with strangers.. and share ideas. I'm here also for entertainment especially when I'm working so I'm 60% a lurker and 40% poster... Is there a thread for suggestions on the betterment of the IC?
