He was offered a new start in LA so got married to prove he was a man to a woman he loves but won't let understand him, he basically is a ruthless human cypher doing what he does because someone has to and it makes a lot of money for him to provide for his family, even if he can't be the father they really need. He's not a care bear. The shit is meant to be dark, it's a broken man in a ruthless city trying to fix things for others professionally because he's a walking disaster.
