No one thinks of black thought when u mention Philly. Some might think of will smith.
This isn't who repped it first. This is about who opened the door for other Philly acts.
Nelly opened the door for St Louis and everybody in the world knew what it was. NWA for Compton. Snoop for LBC. Wu for Shaolin.
Of course there has been others before. But they didn't have worldwide appeal and opened up doors for people to start checking for the city.
Nobody thinks of State Property when you mention Philly. They think of Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince. If you were from my generation you'd remember The Hilltop Hustlers.
You obviously missed the point of the thread.
Yes everybody thinks of State prop when u mention Philly. They also think of Fresh Prince.
But nooone thinks about any of those DJ's u mentioned it the hilltop.
Thats because you're a teenager. If you were a teenager in the 80s you'd think of the Hilltop Hustlers the same way teenagers in the 00s think of State Property. And don't tell me there's more teenagers now than there were in the 80s.
And anybody who's really into Hip Hop acknowledges that the Philly DJs raised the bar from what the New York DJs were doing.
I'm 25. I'm a hip hop head, grew up on fresh Prince and the roots. When piracy came around when I was about 12 I studied all the classics as did everyone I know. U don't have to be born in that era to know the music.
As you don't have to be 60 years old to know about dizzy Gillespie and Ella Fitzgerald. Ive studied it.
And I'm telling u what I know 5 grand. U might like those artists because u grew up with them and they mean something to you.
But in reality, no one knows who they are and A&Rs weren't checking for Philly.
Will was making more money off TV and movies than music. And roots weren't worldwide known representers of Philly as say a NWA for Compton.
Again I've been around the world and I'm saying what I know.

If your a Hip Hop head from that era we definitely took notice they repped Philly. I know I was wating for that album off Static alone and thought Dice Raw was ginna be a problem. Also Fresh Prince was considered commercial we couldn't see past that back than. What some of these kids don't understand is Hip Hop/Rap wasn't considered pop culture until the late 90s.

1. It was one of 16 rap records released in 1979
2. It was the first rap record to come out of Philly

Think he's referring to him as a solo artist, personally I heard of beans before I heard of state property.
I'm across the pond tho so it's probably different.
