Let me begin by saying that this thread isn't about issues in the black community, it's about why we consider our "issues" issues in the black community.

Every documentary, every movie, every tv special talks about the same bullshit: interracial dating, dark v. light, men v. women.

My question is: Is that it? Is that really all we have to discuss in the black community? How come no one tackles the impact of blind religious faith on our community? This idea that "OOOOH LAAAAWD JESUS GON' WORK IT OUT BAAAAYBEEEH!" Or what about the fact that I would argue that it's better to be gay in the black community than to be an atheist.

Why don't we discuss the issues that seem to have more impact on our communities? For example, why is no one bringing to light the fact that public school funding is derived from local property taxes, since white areas are by and far wealthier than black areas the nature of the system is inherently racist.

I know some of the blame has to go to the media, b/c Tyler Perry makes the same movie 20 times and we flock to it b/c, well, I think a lot of the people who love it don't really think anything of it and just enjoy it which is fine. But his movies, coupled with every other movie about black people(obsessed, and whatever else is out there), coupled with Soledad O'Brien having the opportunity but refusing to talk about the important stuff just seems to prime everyone into think that interracial dating, dark v. light, and black men v. black women are the prevailing issues in our community.

What say you?

I don’t agree with what you’ve said. When it comes to the black community, the media is much more diverse with its topics than just things like interracial dating (which is itself an important topic within the black community). Many other important topics have been addressed. You may have to do some researching at times, but they’re there.

Now if you’re complaining about pop culture, well what do you expect? Its pop culture. Still, there are some gems within popular culture when it comes to the black community.

This is exactly why I think people need to take education seriously. For instance, going to college and actually taking college seriously can and will open up your mind to a surplus of real issues not only in the black community, but in the world. Though sadly, the STEM fields seem to be displacing the Humanities fields.

But to be honest, I personally dislike the whole notion of “the black community”. I love black folk, I love everyone, but I think that kind of mentality can be destructive to the black individual and his or her in more ways than one.

Religions that embrace death are deemed idiotic in western society. People who welcome death for there causes are deemed crazy. Because they aren't ingrained with that perpetuated "fear".

I don’t think that this is necessarily true, unless you’re talking about religions that embrace suicide (which I would argue is crazy). What religions are you referring to? Imo, many religions, including Christianity “embrace” death. I mean, that is a big part of religion itself.

I don’t think MLK was deemed crazy? He’s considered a martyr. Other notable people who have “welcomed” death for their causes were/are widely admired.

I still largely agree about the fear-control thing, but it’s certainly not limited to black folk. Still, black folk use it against each other. That’s why witnesses to crimes don’t speak. This is a common human problem.

This is also true. There's a lot of money in the Black community,

Yes, I would think so too. Though I suspect that its pretty sporadic. I would think, for instance, that the gap between the black middle class and the black lower class is very wide. I’m sure there’s money in black middle class neighborhoods, but I suspect it’s a very different story in, say, Brownsville, NY, or some places I’ve seen in Philly. That is, if we’re not about drug money and such..

it's just that we're not unified enough to spend it in the right ways.

But do we (I assume you’re speaking about blacks?) really have to be unified in order to learn to spend money wisely? Are we really dependent on each other to that extent? Imo, we just need to be responsible, educated individuals, and some kind of black unification isn’t entirely necessary to make that happen. Didn’t someone already say that we shouldn’t wait for the government? Well, I think that we shouldn’t wait for each other or the NAACP to save us either. I think good parenting and education are most important. My parents came here with nothing, fought tooth and nail, and they’re now successful and it’s not because of the black community.

Very sad.......too many Blacks would rather spend money on Jordans and the flyest clothes instead of Hooked On Phonics or math and science programs. Too man of us want to be Lebron or Big L, not enough of us want to be the local Black doctor, teacher, or dentist.

You’re referring to young blacks here right? I don’t know the truthful extent to what you said across the black population, but this seems to be the case, but as usual with young people in general. They don’t know how important education is until its too late sadly. I know that I wasn’t too interested in school when I was younger. It was a combination of luck and good parenting that I’ve gotten so far. Again, I think that good parent(s), especially knowledge and experience about life in general, is a key.

I Agree. This Whole Black Community concept is a empty phrase. It's Just something we say. People act like grown adults need together and spend money on the samethings with the same type people. A lot if black owed businesses expect black people to spend with they just because they're black and not because they offer a superior service or product at a more reasonable price than the competitors. That will only do one thing in the end and that's repeat the whole one part of the group gets rich and the rest don't. That's one minority gets rich of being black and the rest stay stagnant off being loyal to being black. Every other so called race is competiting Global and open. White people aren't like this is just a white owned company for white people only (except in racist communities I guess). Competition is what black people as individual need to focus on.

The physical community, the neighborhoods, are suffering due to the result of a mentality. Inside black communities there is an allowance of neglect of property. Anything from simple yardcare to spray painting on some else's business walls (a this is done by the adults of the community KIDS). There's this "I don't give a fuck" attitude about the appearance of these communities. Niggas can complain about trash being everywhere, broken windows on vacant houses, abandon cars in odd places but it's niggas that's doing this shit. How you going to complain about living conditions and your hallway smelling like piss when you piss in the hallway?

Teenager and young adults are destroying their parents property value! Adults are allowing this. Black People alway look at white people and say "they need to whoop they kids" but never really look within our own community and realize whooping aint working. True white teenagers do crazy ass shut to like all youths. Anything from drugs, crime, fucking, etc but they don't fuck up the place they live. A white kid can be on meth and still know his own GPA. A black kid can smoke a blunt and don't even know what the fuck a GPA is. I don't care how much money you through at a school if the overall mentality is the same then your going to get the same results. Part of this problem is the mindset parents give the child about schools. To many parents instead of working with teachers, argue with teachers. "see them damn people getting on my nerves at that damn school. They don't know what the fuck they doing". Stop saying this shit over peity shit infront of kids and go up there and talk with the people who are trying to educate YOUR child. Some parents get so offended when the teacher says something like "little John John is disruptive in class" or give any type of feed back thats negative but us pointed out for correction. Yet don't understand what happen years latter in high school when the child is cussing out the teacher and thinking that all educators are stupid and don't know what the fuck they're talking about.

Within the black community you have a people who don't have respect for each neighbor. Each common unity is broke down then ripped apart by other groups with common unity. We are our own racist. We look for more reasons to hate are own when not in common with some other unity. If poverty is not common to me then it's fuck me I'm a sellout. If my street number or compass direction of my house is not in common with your then it's fuck you! You ain't from around here (which could mean you live around the corner).

But at the end of the day the reasoning for all this is white people don't give a fuck about Us. We give them so much power with that mentality alone. Imagine little kids hearing that. Your house is fucked up not because of what your parents did or did not do but because the white man don't care.

Damn, truer words have never been spoken. I haven't even considered some of that.

Too add to your point about respect for property, I remember talking with an old head a long while ago, and although I honestly cant recall too much, I do remember him talking about how when a local ymca was built for the community, the building was covered in graffiti and was trashed in just a matter of weeks. Sad.

Powerful and true words Ether, I agree with most of your post. It seems too many Black parents expect teachers to raise kids for them instead of raising the kids themselves. Too many Black parents are so fast to bring the belt out to "discipline" the child, not understanding that beating the shit out of that kid is only gonna make him or her more violent to other people. I don't think it's a coincidence there's so much violence in some Black communities.

I do believe slavery and injustice for hundreds of years affected the Black community in a profound way, so whites have to take some blame. But after all this time, it's about times Blacks here, and everywhere really, try and learn some more responsibility.

Very true. It's sad and ironic how humans repeat destructive cycles over and over again. Like the son who never had a father to raise him, so as a result he hates his father throughout his life. But come around, he himself becomes a father but is never there for his son either, so then he ends up having his son hate him in the same way he hated his father. If that makes any sense.

I know people who were strictly "disciplined" by their parents when they were children, and they've turned out to be some of the worst people I know. Some black folk approach child discipline so simple-mindedly, as if punishment and fear alone is what it takes to raise a well behaved child.

Should I lay some of the blame on you for the crimes of some other person that happened to share your skin color ?

So why do you think I should take some of the blame for deeds committed by someone else ?

The "blame white people" idea is the main retarder the Black community.

Come on man, be fucking serious. Hundreds......not decades......HUNDREDS (300+) of years of Blacks being raped, sold off to complete strangers, and beaten has DEFINITELY had a huge impact on the mindset of African-Americans in America today. Slavery and injustice is not the ONLY reason so many Blacks have issues, I already said Blacks have to take more responsibility.

But 300+ years of slavery has without a doubt fucked up the attitudes of many Blacks to this day. It's obvious, this shouldn't even be argued. Tons of sociologists have written books about this. I'm not trying to lay any white guilt on anyone, I'm just telling a basic truth.....slavery fucked up the minds of many Blacks. Period.

I don't think that he was arguing about the effects of slavery. I think that he was arguing about your statement that "whites have to take some blame". I also disagree with that statement, and agree with him. Unless you were making some kind of wide generalization. Most of these whites (and I'm not sure what your defintion of "whites" is) that can be blamed for slavery have long passed away. Not only that, but there are many other people from other races that can be blamed for slavery too.

because the best part of black culture is considered "acting white" by enough black folks... so guess what's left?

i know what you mean when you say the worst part of the culture, which is the mental mindstate that a lot of people in the so called hood have... for the white people who imitate that, it's almost like an imitation of an imitation, black people aren't even suppose to be acting ignorant like that anyway. (not saying anybody is but you get what i'm sayin), and to imitate that mentality is dumber than the ones who think they are born like that (hood)

to this day i look @ craccas and mestizo hispanics/latinos with curiosity and embarrassment when they choose to use the n-word and other negative aspects of our(black) culture.

It's like italians shitted on us(put drugs in the hood, call us moolies) jews don't fuck with us lest they raping hiphop, chinks only want us to hurry up and buy and kick rocks etc....

but out of all the positive blacks did attain, these other races kids decide to imitate thugs and bangers.....strange but amusing...especially wondering how their parents would take it.
