An emcee shouldnt need a hook or fancy beat to make a song. Thats hip hop 101. Back when we used to beat on lunch tables or beatbox it was more about what you said and how you said it.

"And I dont need no hook for this sheeeit"

"heavy airplay all day with no chorus"

I mean you could hear some pretty nice rappers on a real good beat but might still feel a track with a lesser beat cuz it gots some trill lyricist on it!

Part of the beauty of Hip Hop is that you can take an acapella and put it over any beat.

Pop music is more about beats and hooks.

Let me explain it like this (no dike but its mainly guys on here so u will get it)

Ok its like a girl that u wanna fuck with HAS to have a pretty face (lyrics) if she dont have a pretty face then its a no go... That dont mean u cant appreciate a big ass (beat) if shorty has both thats even better... But u can deal with a chick with a pretty face and small ass (lyrics and lackluster beat) more than u can deal with a chick with a big ass and look like Reggie Miller in the face (nice beat wack lyrics)......

cheryl miller isn't ugly

I want to listen to music not spoken word.

Fuck MCing. That shit is dead niggas.

I want to listen to an artist make good music.

The beat is just as important as the lyrics.

Well as a musician myself, of course the beat or the instrumentation matters to me a little more. now i didnt say that to say that i dont like lyrics because i do. in fact, that to me is what hip hop has over a majority (if not all) of other genres of music. but i love to study and pinpoint the chord progressions, suspenisons, modal changes, and ornamentations of a music track

i think the beat is the most important part of the song actually. you can be spitting the illest lyrics ever written but if the beat is wack then it brings down the quality of the overall song.

example number 1. lasers 2. cannibus

The lyrics are the most important part of the song.

Most of the beats in hip hop are samples from already famous songs. Earlier on in rap there were no hooks (Rappers Delight), or the hooks were replaced with a DJ scratching. A lot of songs today, in the mixtape era, don't have hooks ("6 foot, 7 foot").

If you guys are really focused on the MUSIC portion of a song then you should listen to genres that use better instruments and compositions... but niggaz don't listen to that type of stuff.

Whats wrong with spoken word? And just like ppl who like just the beat need to listen to an instrumental cd.... See how that works?

I didn't say there was a problem with spoken word...

And what the fuck does that bold part have to do with what I just said?

Why in tha fuck do you listen to SONGS?

lyrics are the most important part of a record, i agree.

but niggaz be checkin for song w/ the dumbest hook and wackest beat.

y won't you just listen to some poetry or a freestyle or some shit?

an artist's job is to make a good song. that means everything from the delivery, the beat, tha hook, and the bridge needs to put together right.

otherwise you should just be checkin for some sloppy ass production on a mixtape or freestyle battles on youtube.

both of yall niggaz misunderstanding the point of the thread. I didn't ask why don't artist putta chorus on a song or a song w/o a chorus is wack. Niggaz admit the beat and chorus n beat is wack then say its a good record w/ tha wackness included. I said y do niggaz like song w/ wack choruses and wack beats? A well orchastrated song w/o a chorus is not the issue. I don't have a problem with those types of records if they're done right.

Gen put it in perspective using hoes as an analogy pretty well tho.

People say that the music is wack in spite of it having a dope chorus and beat, so what's your point???

The fact is that all of that stuff is superfluous from a hip hop perspective. Look at "6 Foot, 7 Foot" or "A Millie". Both songs are the same: No hook with a freestyle format, & everybody loved it. The beat made the song catchy but the hook was non-existent.

Songs, no matter what genre, have no specific format. Songs can be good without that stuff, in fact, they were dope in the past without that stuff.

smh.....

pimpn, i said EVERYTHING HAS TO BE PUT TOGETHER WELL. for the 3rd or 4th time. And AGAIN FOR THE 3RD OR 4TH TIME,I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT A GOOD SONG THAT DON'T HAVE A CHORUS AT ALL. I'm talking about songs w/ a wack ass hook and beat.

My point is if EVERYTHIN ON THE SONG ISN'T DONE RIGHT IT IS WACK.

Great verse, wack beat, and wack hook= WACK.
Wack verse, no hook, good beat= WACK
Wack verse, great beat, great hook = WACK
great verse, no hook, great beat = GREAT SONG
Great verse, great hook, great beat = GREAT SONG

I'm saying I DON'T GIVE A DAM WHETHER OR NOT IT IS OR ISN'T A HOOK ON THE SONG.

I'm just saying that everything that's PUT ON THE SONG NEEDS TO BE DONE RIGHT IN ORDER FOR IT TO BE A GOOD SONG.

a great verse with a wack and dumbass hook and beat fucks up the SONG

A song written well w/o a hook, on a good beat, and put together right is a great song.

I didn't understand how someone can say they admit that the beat and chorus was ass juice and still like the SONG. WhY wont they just say they like verse because the rest of the SONG aint bout shit.

A song without a chorus can be great because it's not apart of the song.

I just repeated myself 5011 times on this post cuz you wasn't understanding what I said the otha 5011 times I said it.

Whatever, you're not intelligent enough to get the concept. I'mma break it down for you again for the 5012th time.

If the most important part of the song is the lyrics (WHICH IS WHAT YOU SAID), then everything else is extra. It's tantamount to a nice outfit with wack accessories. If you don't like the accessories take them off. The same thing works with music. If you don't like a beat, then ignore it. If you don't like a hook then ignore. It's not hard to do SINCE MOST A LOT OF HIP HOP SONGS DIDN'T USE HOOKS TO BEGIN WITH.

I still don't understand how niggaz can hate on beats when most of them are samples from songs that are ALREADY FAMOUS. So like my previous comments says, niggaz don't like music, but they always talk about it and other peoples tastes in it.

good beats are necessary, specially in this day and age. A hook too, but it depends how im feelin

to me a song has to have everything , there is no reason a song shouldn't have good lyrics and production depending on the song concept a hook should also be good unless it's a song where it's tells a story , intro or outro those don't really need hooks. Every thing should work together to create a mood or experience. That's quality music to me.
