It's not only our symbols and history that this has happened to though, even though I see where you're coming from. I could be wrong, but I think it's obvious that symbols from Ancient Egypt have been strategically transferred to other cultures and given different meanings. Prime example: the Ankh. The ankh is something that meant "life" and then the Romans created their own adaptation of it with the crucifix which was used to humiliate, torture, and kill criminals. Now the crucifix has found it's way into mainstream religion while the Ankh is viewed as a symbol of paganism. Biblical scriptures have been altered and religion has even inserted demonic and pagan attributes into Christianity even though the Bible clearly speaks against it.
