Wilmington police say they uncovered a marijuana growing operation late Thursday while investigating an assault.

Police were called to the 500 block of E. 10th St. about 10:45 p.m. for a possible assault in progress. Officers attempted to talk with the caller, identified by police as William Grimes, 28, who lives on the block. He showed visible signs of an assault, Master Sgt. Adam Ringle said.

When officers approached Grimes, he stepped into the front room of the home, Ringle said. ”He then became combative with the officers trying to help him and a brief struggle ensued and he was wrestled to the ground and placed into custody” by Corporals James Deleo, Justin Kreysa and Charles Puit.

When the officers searched the home, they noticed unusual water and electric lines in two areas and discovered the hydroponic growing operations, Ringle said.

Grimes, meanwhile, was taken to Wilmington Hospital for treatment and he remained combative there and refused to cooperate with investigators, Ringle said. Grimes was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

At the home, police “seized 23 marijuana plants with a drug weight of 3.5 pounds and a street value of almost $10,000, lights, irrigation equipment and various documents. Further investigation linked the drug manufacturing and growing investigation to a Brian K. Lafate, a 43-year-old East Side city resident,” Ringle said.

An arrest warrant is on file for Lafate on charges of aggravated drug dealing and maintaining a drug property.

Pinkett Smith's aunt 'taken aback' by SRB's dig

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake wasn't exactly jumping when Jada Pinkett Smith asked for her help in protecting elephants earlier this week.

The mayor more or less says she had bigger fish to fry -- that and the actress didn't help her out when the city needed it.

But Friday Pinkett Smith's aunt, who runs the Baltimore-based charity of the actress, said her niece has done quite a bit for the city -- and she's a surprised that the mayor doesn't remember it.

"People listening to what [the mayor] said would think Jada Pinkett hasn't done anything for Baltimore and that's not true," said Karen Evans, "I wanted to set the record straight."

Evans also fired off a letter to City Hall, telling the mayor: "Your response to her letter was disturbing, irresponsible, inflammatory and inaccurate."

Earlier this week, Pinkett Smith, working with the animal activist group PETA, sent Rawlings-Blake a letter, writing, she wrote, "as a mother and proud Baltimore native."

Pinkett Smith wanted to make sure no elephants were jabbed with bullhooks during the upcoming performance of Ringling Bros. Circus’ at 1st Mariner Arena. The pointed tools are commonly used to coax the animals into performing at the show.

"Unlike me and other actors, elephants do not choose to perform," Pinkett Smith wrote. "These endangered elephants will soon be in your jurisdiction. My friends at PETA and I join animal advocates across the state in asking for your leadership in holding Ringling accountable and requiring the circus to comply with Baltimore’s absolute prohibition of the use of devices such as bullhooks."

But Rawlings-Blake wan't moved, telling WJZ that since the actress hasn't helped with Baltimore's big issues, she wasn't too concerned about the elephant. Plus, she really likes the circus.

“We’ve reached out about homelessness, about school issues,” Rawlings-Blake told WJZ. “I would have loved to gotten some feedback, support or concern about those issues that are very pressing to the city.”

Evans said she was "just really taken aback" by the mayor's undercut.

She pointed out the million dollars Pinkett Smith gave to the Baltimore School for the Arts in 2006. The yearly contributions to Associated Black Charities. Money for the Park Heights Community Health Alliance. Money to help area schools buy books. Money for the James Mosher Little League.

"The mayor should take a little more time in her responses," Evans said. "I just was very disappointed in her."

Meanwhile, Evans also didn't understand why the mayor didn't take Pinkett Smith's concern about the elephants seriously.

"Jada," she said, "is an animal activist and she believes all living things have a right to be treated humanely."

Evans concluded her letter to the mayor: "Jada is a proud Baltimorean who has generously given back to her hometown and will continue to do so. I hope that at the end of your administration you will be able to say that you have made as positive an impact as she has."

A teenager was ordered held today in lieu of $800,000 bail on charges he shot and wounded an 11-year-old boy who was looking for snakes with friends on Chicago’s South Side earlier this week.

Phil Hall, 16, of the 5900 block of South May Street, was charged as an adult with one count of aggravated battery of a firearm.

Prosecutors said Hall opened fire on a group of boys about 4 p.m. Tuesday while they were trying to catch snakes along railroad tracks in the 300 block of West 59th Street in the city’s Englewood neighborhood. Tysaun Grant was shot in the back and the bullet exited through his chest.

The boy was taken to Comer Children's Hospital, where his condition was stabilized, officials said. Prosecutors did not provide an updated condition for the boy on Thursday.

One of the boys with Tysaun recognized Hall from an incident the day before and picked him out of a photo array, Assistant State’s Attorney Peter O’Mara said.

Three of the victims who were in the group with Tysaun later identified Hall as the gunman in a police lineup.

Hall has a pending juvenile charge of possession of a stolen motor vehicle as well as previous juvenile convictions for attempted robbery and theft, O’Mara said.

Prosecutors did not elaborate on a motive.

Tysaun’s family told the Tribune this week that the boy was not involved with gangs.

“I don’t understand why people would want to do something like this. He’s just a typical child,” said Patricia Island, Tysaun’s grandmother. “That ain’t nothing but an 11-year-old child trying to have fun on a nice day.”

Fight breaks out among parents at East St. Louis High School -- at meeting on resolving conflicts

EAST ST. LOUIS -- Four adults and seven juveniles were arrested following a large fight at East St. Louis Senior High School Friday morning between several parents and students attending a meeting to learn conflict resolution skills.

Police were called to the high school at 8 a.m. after a couple of parents took swings at each other. No one was injured.

Those who were arrested were charged with disorderly conduct. Then, they were allowed to leave the police station, Police Chief Michael Floore said.

The parents and students were at the school to attend a workshop that was designed to teach them alternative ways to solve their differences.

"They were there to learn how to solve their differences without making it physical," Floore said.

"When they got to school, some parents started arguing with each other. This led to a fight involving parents and kids," Floore said.

Police are still investigating the incident, Floore said.

Beth Shepperd, assistant superintendent for human resources and community relations, said she spoke with Jethro Brown, the principal at the school, and learned that "some students who had been fighting for the past couple of weeks" were at the school for officials to learn what the fight was all about and to resolve the issue without any physical contact from anyone.

There are three families involved. The school hoped to get everyone together to settle the conflict instead of allowing it to get to something physical, Shepperd said.

Shepperd said the conflict resolution meeting at the school was held so that the students involved wouldn't get into trouble and have to miss time away from the school.

The efforts by the district didn't work, though.

"A couple of people took swings at each other. I'm not sure if anyone was struck. We wanted the families to coooperate to keep their kids in school," Shepperd said.

Shepperd said the district will continue its work with all of the students in the district. "We want to teach them ways to resolve their conflicts without physical force."

Asked what's next for the students who have been fighting and who were involved in Friday's fight, Shepperd said, "They will be dealt with according to the student code of conduct."

Suspect accused of slicing woman with knife while daughters brawled

Police have charged a 28-year-old woman in connection with an altercation Sunday in Pittsburgh’s Knoxville neighborhood.

Officers responding to a large fight along Arabella Street said they saw three women walking down the street, one with her hand wrapped in a towel with blood running down her forearm and legs.

Police said the bloodied woman, Darnella Austin, told them she was stabbed by another woman, Charniece Cabbagestalk.

Austin told police her children got into a fight with Cabbagestalk's children and that the woman threw a toy at her during the altercation.

Austin said Cabbagestalk began yelling, ‘“You (expletive) want it? I'll give it to ya'll.'"

According to the police report, Cabbagestalk then pulled out a butcher’s knife and began wildly swinging it at Austin and Austin's 15-year-old daughter.

Austin said that she went to block the knife and was struck on her index and middle fingers, which caused a deep laceration that required medical attention.

Cabbagestalk had a different story and said her children and Austin's children were arguing and fighting and that Austin came out of her residence and began throwing toys and sticks at her, hitting her in the back with a plastic toy turtle, police said.

Police said Cabbagestalk gave conflicting accounts that Austin came to her doorway and in another account, that Austin came inside her residence into the hallway swinging a plastic turtle and chasing her up the stairs with it.

In the end, police charged Cabbagestalk with aggravated assault and endangering another person.

Miami Gardens tow truck driver charged in I-95 molestation

Gamalier Lopez Vargas allegedly touched a woman inappropriately after he stopped to help her after she ran out of gas.

BOYNTON BEACH -- After a year of investigating and awaiting DNA test results, authorities arrested a Miami Gardens tow truck driver who, they say, sexually assaulted a woman who needed help after her car broke down on Interstate 95 in Boynton Beach.

Gamalier Lopez Vargas, 34, was arrested Sunday on charges of false imprisonment, battery and exposure of sexual organs. He is being held in the Palm Beach County Jail without bond, jail records show.

The incident goes back to late June 2011, when the woman had pulled onto the shoulder of southbound I-95 near the Woolbright Road exit.

The victim told Florida Highway Patrol investigators that on June 27, she was traveling south on the I-95 when she ran out of gas. She called a few friends for help, but no one answered, she said. About 10 minutes later, Vargas pulled over in his tow truck and offered his help, according to the FHP’s probable-cause affidavit.

Vargas told the victim that he would take her to a Chevron station in Delray Beach, which was off the nearest exit.

During the trip to the gas station, Vargas told the victim he was on his way back to Miami Gardens from West Palm Beach. He started flirting with her, and complimented her eyes, she said.

They arrived at the gas station and Vargas bought the victim a gas container and some gas, according to the affidavit.

According to the affidavit, while driving back to the victim’s car, Vargas asked her about a piercing she had. He then started to inappropriately touch her.

The victim told investigators she pushed Vargas away and told him to stop, but he didn’t. He then began pleasuring himself, she said.

Once back at the woman’s car, she tried to get out of the truck, but Vargas did not let her. He grabbed her left arm, pulled her back into the truck and placed her hand on his crotch, according to the affidavit.

The victim said he prevented her from removing her hand, and said to her, “It’s no big deal” and “You should like it.”

Vargas eventually let the victim out of the truck and drove away. The victim went to the Delray Beach Police Department, where DNA swabs were taken of her hand.

Troopers retrieved surveillance video from the Chevron station the two went to for gas, and another trooper went to interview Vargas’ boss at #1 A1A Express Towing in Miami Gardens.

The owner called Vargas into his office and spoke with the trooper.

Vargas admitted to helping the victim with her car and admitted to asking the victim about her piercing.

He denied any sexual allegations, and said he “would never do such a thing or disrespect a woman in that way,” according to the affidavit.

Vargas gave a sample of his DNA from inside his left cheek. About six months later investigators matched it with the DNA taken from the victim’s hand.

The guards, who were on duty at the nearby Village at Wesley Chapel Apartments, told police they were checking out a suspicious car at about 10:30 p.m. when they heard gunfire coming from Jefferson’s home.

The guards told police they saw Jefferson leave the home and walk toward them aggressively, while making threats to kill. That’s when the guards drew their weapons and fired at the teen, hitting him in the chest, police told Channel 2.
