I still dont like the name I dont think the logo is bad though it will probably grow on me over time probably a few years though.

They settled on the Pelicans because it’s the state bird and because the team officials said Pelicans represent some of their biggest community efforts. They also said the brown pelican, which was once on the endangered species list but has battled its way off, symbolizes the Gulf Coast region, which has fought its way back after Hurricane Katrina endangered this region.

Worst name in pro-sports.

When the first game comes, the players are gonna walk out the locker room all mad and reluctant an' shit like when ya momma bought you some bootleg shit that you knew you was gon get clowned at school for.

I think pelicans will grow on everyone especially if the logo looks good. Remember when everyone hated the Thunder

Nope. Don't remember that.

Perfect name. Fierce, simple, two syllables, matches the city and state.

Congrats to the Bobcats tho. They no longer have the woat-name title.

This is what happens when a 90yr senial white man buys a basketball team. He thinks its a baseball team from the 40s. Shits embarrassing. I'm not gonna stop rooting for my team but I refuse to buy any thing with the name Pelican or a Pelican on it....I just can't do it. And you won't here me saying that shit in public either....its just gone be New Orleans...... Whoever the VP of Marketing is needs to be fired for letting Benson run with this. Only reason he picked that name cuz his cheap ass already owned the rights and didn't want to shell out a couple of mil to take VooDoo from the Arena League team thats bout to go under any fuckin way........'scust.

Got these corny ass beat writers saying no one will care when we become a winning team....fuck all that! Ol pretending they can see into the future ass niggas. I"M MAD bout this shit. Cuz I'm a homer, I don't have it in me to root for another NBA team. Shoulda fuckin stayed the Hornets....excuse me while I search online for Anthony Davis Hornets jerseys....I refuse to rock a Pelican one real talk....

Pelicans bout to be the first pro-sports team with a "Air Wack" merchandising deal.

Success changes everything the knicks are named after shorts, there are two teams in the mlb named after SOCKS! just cuz your a thunder fan dont tell me you were excited when yall went from Supersonics to Thunder. It sounded like a WNBA name

Like I said, Thunder was fine with me, and I don't remember anybody being mad at it. The jerseys are kinda plain, but the name is perfect. I lived in OK for 17 years.

Thunder, Lightning and Tornadoes in the sky is just as common as pelicans in n'awlins. lol

Thats my point u lived in OK so u understood Thunder. I dont live in New orleans but i understand the pelican name. All the people complaining live outside of the cities

From a marketing standpoint this shit is even worse.

With the name "New Orleans" having 3 syllables, they should have made sure the name had no more than two syllables. That might not mean much to y'all, but I work in marketing and that kinda shit matters.

It's called giving the name "legs". It's easier for something to catch through "word of mouth" when it has minimal syllables.

Think about all of the most popular websites. How many have more than two syllables?

Ya - hoo.

Goo - gle.

Twit- ter.

Face - book (used to be THE facebook, but Marketing experts got hold to it.)

Same with team names.

People keep mentioning the Knickerbockers, but they changed the official name to the "Knicks" for marketing purposes.

Thun - Der

La - kers

Cow - Boys

Yan - Kees

Fal - Cons

Saints (one syllable)

The Pelicans full name will have 6 syllables. That's wack from a marketing standpoint.

Look at the Patriots (New En-Gland Pa-tri-ots)

They're probably the most successful franchise of the last 10 years, but yet their team is still not as marketable as others outside the New England area. It ain't just because of syllables, but it doesn't help.

Nikka, if you never heard or felt Thunder or lightning, you don't live on planet earth. Stop.

Thats true but its all about pronunciation No one pronounces the full name of Mav-er-icks they just say Mav-ricks Pel-i-cans will turn into Pel-cans in the conference the guy already said the chant is lets go 'Pels. Same with the Cavaliers or Timberwolves or Trailblazers
