She may finally be earning enough to barely scrape by while still making the payments for the first time since she graduated, at least until interest rates rise and the payments on her loans with variable rates spiral up. And while her job requires her to work nights and weekends sometimes, she probably should find a flexible second job to try to bring in a few extra hundred dollars a month.

Ms. Munna understands this tough love, buck up, buckle-down advice. But she also badly wants to call a do-over on the last decade. "I don't want to spend the rest of my life slaving away to pay for an education I got for four years and would happily give back," she said. "It feels wrong to me."

Correction: An earlier version of this column online misstated the benchmark year in a study by the Project on Student Debt.

This girl I know got over 500k in student loan debt from like 7 or 8 years of different medical schooling, she works at a dentist office making like 35k a year. If I aint get a scholarship to college i assure you aint no way i was goin.

Too much for fuckin school anyway, buy the same book for $35 and teach yourself and start your own business you dont need to spend all this money to get a good job, who the fuck wanna work on wall street? I think if college's are gonna cost so much not even including interest rates on the loans, book fee's, the cost to maintain living conditions while your there, etc... That every college should get a partnership deal with companies so people get placed into their job fields upon completion of the degree. Not only would it assure someone they spent the money for a good reason, but it will also stop the black man not getting hired shit because he would end up going straight to the job. Doubt it will happen ever though even trade schools are cutting their job placement perk.

i tell younguns all the time.. the only way to be successful in life is if you have your own business.. no middle man.. no white-man.. no jew.. you sign the checks and make the money.. a 10k loan can get you started and rolling.. be it in the music business or food industry, whatever.... if you dont have a scholarship, dont even bother!! you'll be dawging it for years.. you'll be slaving all through your 20's and miss out on life.. still working for a white man.. still being told what to do.. WHY?

research, right planning, and knowing the right people is your key!!

this can go either way.. legally or illegally.. haha

You really don't know anything. It's hard to start a business and even harder to start a successful business. The banks are barely loaning money anyway and even then you can fall in debt because the banks are out to take people to the cleaners given the chance. It takes more than money to start a business anyway.See that is the benefit of being in College and taking a business class.

thats a bold statement to drop without knowing a person.... obviously, you dont know shit..

10k loan doesnt mean a loan from the bank.. could be a loan from your parents? friends? 10k is NOT alot of money.. only way you fall in debt is IF you DONT PLAN and step into a game that you dont know..

why the hell would you start a resturant business next to 2 mcdonalds, a taco bell, and a dominos pizza????

College degree means nothing.. Business degree??? Thats BS.. that will only make your resume look cute.. What you learn there you can learn on your own free will..

FACTS- only way to make good money is if your the boss.. if you aint a boss.. then.. gEt Ya BROKEE ASS STEPPN..

If you think the only thing that stops businesses from succeeding is poor planning, then you have not lived long enough. College degree means nothing? Ok, buddy, maybe it wasnt for you, but it is for some people. Good luck in that rap career...

Cosign this; what the fuck was she thinking studying that bullshit? How about blaming herself for such a bullshit major that wasn't going to give her many job prospects?

But alot of college grads end up finding work outside of their line of study anyway. so in essence, they also spent considerable amounts of money on degrees they never really used either. only difference is she did it directly rather than indirectly

I agree that starting your own business should be the goal of anyone, but 10K is not cheap! I know I don't have access to 10 gs, and there are millions of people right now getting kicked out their houses or apartments that owe LESS than 10 gs.

Many parents don't even have 10 gs in their savings account, and I would guess most young people don't have 10 gs either. I do agree though that having a college degree doesn't mean much nowadays, a shame because I just got mine Sunday.

So true, I got my college degree but it's looking more and more likely that I will be doing armed security work instead of using my political science degree. SMH..........

Understand what you're saying fam but unless she was going to be a preacher or teacher maybe, what kind of marketable skills do her degrees give her to pursue other lines of work? Then she had the gall to get mad because she could only find a job that was paying $22 an hour? WTF I wish back when I graduated somebody would've offered me a $22 an hour job. Shit back then, minimum wage was still under $5 an hour.
