I have the same issue too. I just go into the thread and delete it that way. It's more work doing it that way but it is what it is.

sink makes it so you do not have to lock a thread but no matter what it cannot be bumped back to the top so it will stay at the last post time of the sink...

you have to actually go into the thread and use the gear icon and go to delete topic to delete threads. I have found that with the spam it is easiest to merge 6 of them together(otherwise you get that permission error crap) then go to that gear icon and delete topic. It would be nice i we could just use the delete option next to merge but these steps I have given are a good work around in the interim. Also it would probably need to be shouted @toddo and @icyliquid in order to have them work on the solutions...
