Underrated: Gavrilo Princip

With just a couple of bullets, this Serb starts the First World War, which destroys four monarchies, leading to a power vacuum filled by the Communists in Russia and the Nazis in Germany who then fight it out in a Second World War (which is a continuation of WW 1).

Aftermath of the 2nd WW:

The Holocaust causes even more Jews leave Europe and the Jewish state of Israel is formed..... surrounded by Arab states (how has that worked out).
Colonial powers (reluctantly) give up control of colonies in Asia and Africa (lots of wars fought over this).
The Cold War

Some people would minimize Princip's importance by saying that a Great War was inevitable sooner or later given the tensions of the times, but I say that it was no more inevitable than, say, a war between Nato and the Warsaw Pact. Left unsparked, the Great War could have been avoided, and without it, there would have been no Lenin, no Hitler, no Eisenhower. Princip is one of the few individuals ever to make history.

And all Princip wanted was to bring Bosnia under Serb control, it's a bit ironic that after a century of very messy history, it isn't.

who are some overrated and underrated people in world history and why? science, history, war, art, Presidents, etc...

for me,
underrated: Nikola Tesla (reason i thought of this thread idea)- was the Thomas Edison before Thomas Edison. in the realm of science/technology, Tesla was way ahead of the curve. also had competent, practical designs for a Death Ray.

overrated: Christopher Columbus- wasn't lookin for America. he accidentally found it on his way to India. more importantly, he and his crews were responsible for atrocities carried out on natives, yet he's generally regarded as a type of noble hero.

Cosign!!!!!!

Underrated: Idi Amin- Evil bastard but I give him respect for refusing to bow out to the European powers that be.

Overrated: JFK- Vastly so. If dude doesn't die that day in legacy, he goes down as just another president

On the Idi Amin shit. Really dude. He was a instrument. They knew he was crazy.

JFK - Cuba Missile crisis anyone?

Overrated: Thomas Edison, a businessman who gets the credit for things he didn't do.
Che Guevara, a homicidal communist racist lunatic, the fact that he's on T-shirts makes me laugh because that's the one thing he would have hated most.

Yeah, Che' went crazy at the end. He was on some fuck everything after awhile.

First of all, this is prolly one of the better threads I've seen on this bitch in a minute. As far as the bolded, CC wasn't even the first European on in America. He was WELL behind the vikings. But yeah, that nigga is MAD overrated.

I'd have to say that Abe Lincoln is super-overrated as well. If you know anything about him, you know that he was just as big a racist as southern slaves owners, feeling that the black man was inferior mentally and morally. But he just felt like each person should be able to achieve whatever they can on their own merits. Meaning YOU benefit from your work, not some slave owner. So he freed the slaves and is held up by history. Good look on freeing the slaves...but the rest of his ideology was bullshit.

Good point and one of the main reasons he freed slaves was because of the fact that the Southerners had economical advantages over northerners because of the slave trade.

He was a known abolitionist. but he did not think AA could ever get a fair shake in America so he always believe they would have to leave America.

Hell I think they had slaves in Illinois when he was a senator and governor!

That bastard was busy trying to appease to white folks, rather than face reality, MLK was too idealistic for my liking and yes he is overrated in the White mainstream media.

underrated: Marcus Garvey

overrated: Rosa Parks (watch Barbershop and see what Cedric the Entertainer says)

Rosa Parks is not overrated, neither is MLK or some of the other people listed in this thread. She did something important, it was courageous and more than what many of the people who claim she was overrated have ever done. The fact that she was a regular citizen and not a political activist (?) makes it all the more significant.

He isn't. Rosa Parks is though. Niggas act like she was the first to sit in the front of the bus. She was connected, that's what made her special. But in the grand scheme of the civil rights movement.....

whoever believes MLK is overrated then you need to reconsider, that's rediculous

I cosign Christopher Columbus being one of the most overrated in history
If you were to look at a modern textbook intended for middle schoolers today you would laugh at all the shit that has been skewed or reinterpreted
They been shoving this bullshit in our faces for years
