thats real, maybe it's because i'm not in highschool or college, but it's like these cats are "internet" rappers. i hear more about indie or local rappers when i'm out in the mix. only one i've heard one of the homies talkin about is wiz, but i think he found out about him online lol.

that is the new age promotion though so it is what it is.

i dont even think them niggaz exist outside this forum.

yea we was talking about that the other day... most my friends have no clue who J Cole, Wiz and some of them are.

THey live and die by internet promotion instead of good old face to face fanbase buidling

But Royce?? Come on now, everyone that knows hip hop knows royce

im just wondering if these kats are as popular as some of you make em out to be?

cuz if i bring up these niggas names to a casual hip hop head, im sure they'd look puzzled.

the irony is, since only internet fans know about these guys, it'll be hard for them to sell

because most internet fans download albums

don't matter as long as i know who to check for i'm good cause the radio is wack so i'll stick to the internet for the next big thing. the industry seems to force on you who they want to be the next star anyway the net give me a better look at the new dudes. if not for the reason i wouldn't even mess with j.cole prolly same for drake but i still don't mess with him like that anyway

true these dudes have no buzz or anything in the streets no blub songs or anything anywhere and having a internet buzz means nothing b/c these are the guys most likely to download your album and never go buy it

i've said it a million times.

THey just release mixtape after mixtape for free download and hope for a cosign or that shoot for the moon opportunity.

Getting out and doing hella local shows and chopping it up with your fans aftewards is like the 401k of hip hop

no they're not as popular as people on the IC want or believe they are....and yeah the fact that the majority of people would rather download the album than spend money is the reason why these rappers probably won't get more than internet fame regardless of how talented they are

so are they ( the artists) winning or losing by not going mainstream?

i think if you plan on making a successful career out of rap, you have to make it beyond internet forums.

people are free to like who they like, but if your fanbase is made up of people that mostly download your shit, its a very odd position to be in. because its great that they like your work, but if they're all stealing it, how you supposed to eat.

btw i download too, just making an observation.

you're losing because at the end of the day this is a business and the mainstream is where the most money is...regardless of how much niggas hate "the machine" it serves a purpose...i think too many fans forget this is the music BUSINESS and these rappers have to make a profit in order to maintain their careers...if they don't make money they don't get to keep recording...

i dont agree with this... This is if cats want to stack millions and millions of dollars (which in most cases they'll get shelved)

However, when they're wasting time releasing 5 mixtapes over 3yrs and not touring for shi*... they can be seriously caking off of touring and hand to hand CD/Merch sales... all the while building their fan base. That's the real business about it, that they dont seem to understand

I'd think people like J Cole and Wiz could get at least $1000 a show (modest) they do 150 shows a year... while building a brand name all the while, promoting on the web. You're making more money that way verses releasing free shit. As well as showing "the business" that you can cake off tours, and hopefully driving a 360 deal

nothing wrong with being indie but if you are relying on the internet and not actually touching down state to state promoting yourself physically, it's tough. even artists who have industry co-signers suffer from the hot today, fell off tommorow syndrome, drake aint even dropped and cats is saying he fell off. how is that? so you can see how finicky the net fans can be at times, i wouldn't put too much of my career stock into net buzz if i was tryna promote myself. but in this day and age it's really hard you have to be creative, i think the internet is good but that can't be your sole means of promotion.

but who is coming to a show to hear a nobody they need a radio mainstream hit to get folks to come out to a show if j cole has a show tomorrow the headline would be Jay-z's 1st artist and not J cole with the hit song so and so. I agree with what you are saying but they have to create a street buzz to gt folks to come out and see them some type of club hit or something. saying they can do 150 shows at 1000 a piece is nothing. Wale went on tour with Jay-Z and got 300,000 paid his band 100,000 then subtract paying your management team and others that 150,000 is bout 50,000 at best after taxes. and if they have signed a 360deal they making less than half on their own tour.

the only place i hear about new artists is from the internet.... I DONT LISTEN TO THE RADIO AND WILL NEVER DO SO AGAIN... how else does a new artist get exposure???

Through word of mouth, through radio, thru TV/video, internet and shows...

If your not looking for new artists your not gonna find em.

as for the bolded those arent good resources anymore...

So how does the casual fan get to know the J cole's or Wiz's? he has to be put on by one of his boys... Funk Flex and Angie Martinez aint doing shit for new artists unless they walkin the building wit 50 cent or Jay-Z.. the whole system is bullshit
