Report: Whiteside should have the mentality of Mourning
By Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald:
Pat Riley indicated the Heat shouldn’t go more than three or four possessions without getting the ball to Hassan Whiteside and Whiteside should have the mentality of Alonzo Mourning.
"If Alonzo didn’t get a touch three or four times down the court, he would put his big hands around my neck verbally or physically,” Riley cracked.
But Whiteside must improve his passing out of double-teams. He was the first player in NBA history this season to log at least 1000 minutes and have six or fewer assists, according to the good folks at Elias Sports Bureau. His assist-to-turnover ratio (6 to 58) was abysmal.
• Justise Winslow, SF, Duke (10) • Josh Richardson, SG, Tennessee (40)
Considering the looming free agency decisions with Dwyane Wade and Luol Deng, the Heat needed insurance and an infusion of youth on the perimeter. They met both needs when Winslow slipped to the 10th pick and Tennessee shooting guard Josh Richardson was snagged in the second round, giving Miami a pair of productive two-way talents. Celtics were willing to offer up to 6 picks to Hornets, sources say
BOSTON -- The Boston Celtics made a strong final push to trade up into the top 10 in the draft, culminating in an offer to the Charlotte Hornets that included as many as six draft picks, including four potential first-rounders, for Charlotte's No. 9 pick, sources said.
The Celtics, whose offer was rebuffed by the Hornets, wanted to move up from No. 16 in order to draft Duke forward Justise Winslow, who was ultimately selected by the Miami Heat at No. 10. The Hornets took Wisconsin center Frank Kaminsky at No. 9.
The Celtics also made unsuccessful attempts to acquire pick Nos. 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8, sources said.
Meeting with reporters in the aftermath of the draft, Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge hinted at his team's dogged pursuit.
"Maybe we were going too hard at it," he said. "There was a time when I thought, 'Whoa, this is getting a little out of control.' We're putting a lot of eggs in one young player's basket. So I'm not frustrated. In the long run, maybe it'll be the best."
The Celtics drafted Louisville guard Terry Rozier with the 16th pick, the first of four selections they made on the night.
Ainge has accumulated a treasure trove of picks in remaking the Celtics over the past few seasons. The team could have as many as 17 picks -- including four potential first-rounders in 2016 -- over the next three drafts.
