Seismologists at the California Institute of Technology said Monday that more than 400 earthquakes have shaken the Southern California city of Brawley during the past 48 hours, and the quakes could continue for up to a week.
The majority of the quakes were less than 4 magnitude, aside from two larger ones measuring 5.3 and 5.5, said Caltech Seismologist Kate Hutton. The quakes are known as a "swarm," she said, which is "fairly common activity" for the Imperial Valley, with similar swarms in the 1970s.
"Typical Imperial Valley swarm lasts a few days up to a week," Hutton said. "I would be surprised if there weren't some more. We may be on the tail end, but it may not be, we don't really know."
Hutton said the Brawley earthquakes would not likely affect the San Andreas fault near the Salton Sea, which has not seen an earthquake since 1680. The center of the Brawley quakes is about 15 miles away from that portion of the fault, so the small earthquakes likely would not trigger a larger quake or relieve any pressure from the fault.
"We've had them in the past and it hasn't triggered it," Hutton said. "It's probably not close enough to have much of a change."
The Brawley quakes are also unrelated to a 7.3 magnitude subduction earthquake that occurred Sunday off the coast of El Salvador, said Caltech Seismological Engineer Francisco Ortega.

I thought the world was supposed to end in December 2012? And we're not there yet. Anyways, the world aint ending in 2012 just like it didnt end every past year like joe said it would. The world is going to end when we least expect it.
