Nicki didn't switch her persona. This was always her persona, it was just dumbed down. She was even inside a barbie box on her very first mixtape cover. WTF? Even in interviews & her cheap Come Up music videos you can tell she was a silly character. She was only spitting that "street shit" before because she knew that's the only way she'd get on...because people are so close-minded. IE: People in this thread. Now that she's on, she's doing her.

well, if your admitting she tried to come off as street to get signed, and then decided to do the barbie thing after getting her deal, then your admitting she switched her persona. she had a street persona, now she has a barbie persona.

and do you really believe that if she wasn't famous she would be walking around with pink weave in her, fake butt pads, and talking like that in real life?

she went to a very prestigious performing arts school in new york and studied acting. she playing a role to get attention. just like a lot of entertainers do.

She didn't switch her persona. Like I said, you can tell she's always had basically the same personality, but she basically just used the typical female rapper image to get noticed.

I'm aware she was a drama student, but I don't think she's using that to create some false personality, she's using it to show her own personality. That's why I call her the rap Lady GaGa. I'm not talking about dressing like Gaga, I'm talking about Nicki's worth ethics, the way she feeds the press her persona, how she is building her brands and fanbase. GaGa followed every correct step on how to expose herself to the mainstream so that she had the chance to do HER as an artist. Nicki did the same thing. Not even Kim was that smart. Kim never had control of her career, image, lyrics, ect til almost 10 years into her career anyways.

Exactly. Like I said, this is why nobody gives a shit about rap anymore. If you're not doing or rapping about certain, specific things, it means you're wack or you're a gimmick. Rap fans like to pick certain rappers apart too much. Especially female rappers.

You guys would never knock a man like Jeezy for his rhymes, I have to sit up here and tell y'all why 90% of southern rappers can't rap. But god forbid Nicki does something different or throw a little pop into her music and it's a problem. That's what's wrong with rap and especially female rap. Everybody picks female rappers apart. i think you're confusing the idea of her being a gimmick, and her using gimmicks to get publicity. i agree that most rappers and most entertainers) use gimmicks and personas to get attention. all some people are saying is that nicki use of gimmicks to get attention outshines her use of talent to get attention. when people talk about nicki minaj they usually talk about her image, not her rap skills.

Oh no she has definetly used gimmicks, trust me I know that - like her losing her stuffed animal Oscar and offering 50k for it's return...she ain't lose that shit lol. But she's not a gimmick rapper. It may be having a backlash though because of what people are talking about, but when her album drops at the end of the day, that's not what she's going to want, and hopefully people shift their focus. I'm saying though, gossip and blogs aside, magazines, artists in the industry, journalists are talking about her as an artist so it can't be going that bad.
