Do people not realize a lot of the old laws like this in the Bible were there for the protection of people? It was a commandment to wash your hands before eating, not because it's something Godly, but because not doing so can lead to transferrance of disease and sickness. The same thing with unlcean meats. Yes, pork can contain many different virulent agents, so back in the day when cooking wasn't as precise, preservation wasn't as good, and the nature of disease wasn't fully understood eating pork and many other things could be deadly. It's not as much of an issue now.
I think that's what Jesus was getting at with the verse in the first post. Yes, he was talking about washing your hands, but the point holds for food too. The people around him at the time had this perception that rituals such as washing your hands had something to do with your cleanliness as a person both physically and spiritually. Jesus was making it know that washing your hands really has nothing to do with your spiritual cleanliness because it's not what goes into your body that determines that. It's what comes out (anger, hatred, etc...) that will make you unclean. The same argument can hold for the foods we eat.
